In history class we learned that Judaism borrowed the ten commandments from civil laws predating it. Religions are like that: stealing credit for things.
@FeliciaG You can read the Code of Hammurabi and the Story of Gilgamesh on line. It's amazing to see the parallels. Sometimes there are truths, that one should allow people to grasp without being prompted. It wouldn't be ethical for a professor to come out and say that Judaic scripture was plagiarized. That all I meant to say. I wasn't trying to be Sammy Stir Shit either! Not this time! 🤔
@FeliciaG Yes! Horus, of corus!.....Nimrod and Ashteroth.....Dyonisus, Mithras, Osiris, I think there some eastern stuff too in Upanishads or something.
@puck61 I'm aggravated. My glasses broke, and I'm looking through the two tiny circles at the bottom of a spare pare trying to type! People in Somalia think they have problems? Ha!

In a time before sophisticated language when grunting suggestively was the prime social norm, we managed to not rape and kill each other long enough to form cogent functioning communities. This phenomenon is in no small measure explained by the complex ecosystem of neurochemicals which drive our need for cohabitation and safety. I have seen no evidence based formulation that defines clearly either a. what god is or b. how it affects this phenomenon in any verifiable way.

I think morals greatly aided in the prosperity of our species so we evolved to have them.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@DonaldTrumpet Do you believe in God?
Reject · 26-30, M
@SimplyTracie That's scary to think about. 😖 Thank goodness we're born in modern civilization!
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Reject yeah I love camping but those days were too harsh

Could be from what we are. For exapmle if you build a snowman when you're younger, you feel creative, you feel passion, you feel like you need to care care for that fragile thing. Or if you got your favourite toy for christmas, you'll take care of it and try not to break it. What I'm trying to say is that, how we behave and what we feel is right is based on the experiences that make us up.
An example for a religious person. As a young girl you probably were taught that God loves you when you're doing good things and He doesn't like when you sin. So I feel like that would be a easier route for you to grow a more moral and emphatic person. From your love and fear of God.

I think many times they come from our parents or the people that raised you. That said sometimes ur taught good morals and accept that as part of your life. Sometimes ur taught bad morals and accept that as part of ur life. I think in both instances it can also work completely opposite on certain individuals (although I don't think that is the norm).

I do think sometimes people have an internal barometer with morals.. But mostly I think it is a learned behavior.
For some of us everything comes from "god". For some of us nothing comes from god. I believe in an ultimate source of all things, you might call 'god', so yes. I think that everything that is, comes from that ultimate source. I don't simply believe that 'God created..' I believe that 'God perpetually creates all the time.
Fangirlsarah1996 · 26-30, F
If we believe that we were created by "someone" doesn't that remove everything special about us?

Purpose.

Individuality.

Freedom.

Things that give our life meaning...worth.

we inherently know right from wrong
we may not do the right thing but we know
they've done these tests on babies
even they know
where does it come from
from echoes from the past
I don't know
Thodsis · 51-55, M
No. Of course they don't. There are, or have been, hundreds of gods. Each god has a different story and all gods have been invented by people.
mrmoose · 70-79, M
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@mrmoose Like sharia law?
mrmoose · 70-79, M
@SimplyTracie that, and of course "head hunters"
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@mrmoose Maybe they know it's wrong but they do it anyway because it's their culture.
If morals came from God they would be ethically meaningless. Like a law imposed by man. You obey or get squashed. Even a psychopath can learn to obey.

Ethics have to be created by man. We have to circumscribe limits around our actions as training so that we can express, articulate, and embody our values.

Those values-- we can argue where they come from.
SW-User
No, they mostly come from the way we were brought up

@SimplyTracie They develop as a result of becoming a civilization.

They are merely a construct. There is no 'universal' morality.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Quizzical Like Thou shall not kill ?
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@SimplyTracie Even that's not Universal. There had been human sacrifices throughout history.

Humans make gods, therefore a particular society make their own rules and 'morality' which are encouraged/enforced by that mythical figure.

Gods are a way to control people.

NeloAngelo · 26-30, M
nah. we are born with an ingrained knowledge of basic morality. "Nobody has to tell you its not ok to kill yo momma" - eddie griffin

the rest is just law.
psikeo · 31-35, M
hell no. Our morals come from our family, our own sense of right/wrong and the community we live in. A lot of morality is devised from religion, but not from any god
I do declare man-made history has taught humanity a set norm of standards to attest to as their own to make living in their own eyes
bravo55 · 70-79, M
To make an otherwise good person do bad things you need religion.
VeronicaPrincess · 61-69
They come from the Universe, which is, in a sense, God.
3venus · F
Nope. They come from within.
