Do you think landline wall jacks are necessary today?

We’re repainting a bedroom and I told my wife we should remove it and cover the hole. We haven’t used a landline in almost 7 years.

I still have them, also an old rotary phone.
@MarineBob Ahhhh. I figured there was something else needed these days. I remember with the rotary phones how they would sometimes give a single “ding!” when lightning would flash outside. It made a thunderstorm all the more ominous.

I still use mine. I prefer it to cell phones/stupid smart phones.
If you plan on living there forever, it may not matter.

I still have mine for the phone, modem and to fax.
I much prefer it to a cell phone.

Necessary? Probably not. But since it’s there, you might as well keep it there in case you were to sell the house. Or maybe you could convert it to a jack that has that and other more useful outlets like USB’s with it.
I wouldn't cover it but that's just me. You might need it later or you might sell your house and someone else might need it.

wifi can be jammed, landline cannot

I have an Obi device for voip. I unplugged the physical phone line that runs to my house and plugged the Obi into my internal wired phone harness so I can bring voip access to every room in the house. I figured since the harness runs through the walls already, I may as well use it. Your needs may vary.
Need it for the modem..

You definitely need a landline with voicemail, so from time to time you can kick back with a beer and listen to "Scammer's Greatest Hits".

We still have those for internet over here (VDSL/2, FTTC). Slowly being replaced by FTTH.

I did the same thing. Mine was surface mounted with wiring all along the floor molding. Looks nice and clean now.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
but, VOIP lines are also carried through the house by wires.

Those things are useless as Tits on a chicken lol
CestManan · 46-50, F
It won't hurt to have it there.
replace them with rj45/cat5.
Lordlestermount · 51-55, M
No they are not nessessary
Dolimyte · 41-45, M
Fill in the hole.
HannahSky · F
People still use them.
Azlotto · M
I still use mine. I even still use fax machines.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Azlotto i scan and send attachments, haven't sent a fax in many years. I actually have a plain old telephne line, POTS, which came in handy when all power was lost and the VOIP went down.
