For American citizens:

Both of my grandmothers were immigrants. Mom's mom was from Czech Republic, dad's mom was from Australia.

My great grandparents came over from Italy
My husband and his family were in a lottery and came over by boat when he was 8.

Great grandma from Northern Ireland, a couple of great-greats from Czech Republic and Ireland. A good number came over in colonial times.

My mother and her parents came from Italy. My father was born here, but his parents also came from Italy.

My mom is Filipino.
My dad has three generations going back to Austria.

How do Americans know so much about their heritage but so little about everything else

Probably the 1700s. Peasant stock all the way, from the U.S. perspective. My mother’s ancestors were Native and French indentured servants, Pop’s were African and Haitian slaves.
