@helenS How dare you presume to tell what to do and what not to do?? So I see those words you called so "mysterious" are NOT so much since you see yourself fit to correct me about their true meaning.

I did not know God had directly communicated this to you that "of course" "the word" was His son. But as a Catholic I need no correction from a semi-pagan Gnostic.

The case of a child watching something as brilliant and complex as a man playing chess against himself and trying to understand what is happening and what it all means let alone what the next MOVE is a perfect analogy for our understanding of God and His creation AND HIS WORDS and the mystery surrounding them. Sorry if my analogy was too literate for your tastes.

@Abrienda "But as a Catholic I need no correction from a semi-pagan Gnostic.

— If you accept critical remarks only if they are licensed by the pope then so be it.
Abrienda · 26-30, F
@helenS It wasn't a "critical remark". It was an arrogant and nasty personal attack which you have now made worse by showing you are a bigot. So if you are happy to be THAT, so be it then.

YES... my verse! Can you even imagine that scene? AMAZING!

"In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” 4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”" Isaiah 6:1-8

@ms20182878 Yes indeed. I love it and think of it daily. Thank you.
ms20182878 · 61-69, M
@Abrienda That whole scene is so powerful... images of the Holy of Holies in the Temple... images of the New Jerusalem (most likely)… and Isaiah in the midst of it all, standing unclean before the Lord. But the Lord, through His immense love and grace miraculously cleans up Isaiah for service. And, Isaiah accepts.

BUT... There is another interesting aspect to this scene. It begins "In the year that King Uzziah died..." So we must ask, who was King Uzziah? Well... the lesson in this is that King Uzziah was a king who lived half-heartedly for God. It was only after he died, that God showed His Glory to Isaiah. We must learn to live whole-heartedly for God... that's the lesson for us.

“Ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”
Genesis 3:5
helenS · 36-40, F
@Abrienda The story Genesis 3 (as I see it) was written by priests, and is part of their fight against enlightenment (represented by early Greek philosophy, or non-religious philosophy in general). Their point is that independent thinking is inherently "evil", so it must come from Satan (= the snake). So - yes, the snake in the story is the anti-hero, from the point of view of the authors, and the snake, representing independent thinking, is my hero here indeed.

@helenS
It is rather simple.
When God gave Moses the Torah on Mount Sinai it was a literal historic document.
Abrienda · 26-30, F
@helenS What a shiver that verse sends through the body...
KnightRanger · 56-60, M
That is a wonderful one! And my mother's was "I can do all things in him who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13) But my favorite passage, though it's more than one verse, is from the Prologue to St. John's Gospel:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it... And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father." — John 1:1-5,14

As a Christian, this is both what I believe, and why. <3
Abrienda · 26-30, F
@KnightRanger It is also scientifically sound.

Yes!!!! That is an amazing verse!!!
I cannot get through the 23rd Psalm without getting emotional. I have been in the valley.
Read Romans 13:4 another favorite

‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

Matthew 25, 34-36

This shows he offered his Son.
Behold I stand at the door and knock.
If anyone hears my voice and opens the door then I will come in to him/her and dine with him/her and he/she with me

I remember this verse in Isaiah when the Prophet is overwhelmed by the beauty of God.
Pfuzylogic · M
@Abrienda
That does sound very bold to defend against such odds.
Abrienda · 26-30, F
@Pfuzylogic Because if they don't then the SS will attack into the support part of the American forces...truck drivers, cooks, hospital staff. And there is no one else but them to stop that. It is beautiful scene and fits Isaiah 6:8 perfectly. You ought to watch...very inspiring

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son so that he that would believe would not perish but have everlasting life.
Ismiles001 · 56-60, M
I have found many that applied to a situation or time in my life, but I always come back to John 3:16 as my favorite.
Abrienda · 26-30, F
@Ismiles001 It is beyond comprehending how beautiful that is -

"For God so loved the world, he gave His only begotten Son..."

@helenS Hahahah! We will see about that!

If you wanted to pursue your original topic we can do that. I am sure you know that Gnosticism is heresy and not to be tolerated as scripture. It seems that the fiction writer Dan Brown has been promoting their acceptance through his books and movies but certainly with your academic background you would know better.
