@Gusman To be quite honest the UK Term Boot makes no more sense to me than the USA Term Trunk. That said, language doesn't necessarily make sense.

For even greater fun ... I studied French in school with a teacher from Quebec ... I learned that French as spoken in France vs Quebec is even more different than English in the USA vs English in the UK. I didn't realize that until I spent a month in France for work and people kidded me about having a French Canadian accent.
