I Am Dutch

I am Danish and I have noticed that many Americans but also other English speaking people belive that Dutch is the language spoken in Denmark.
This can be a little annoying for a Dane but I wonder how a Dutch person feels about so many people believing that her language is the language of another country than the Netherlands.

It is funny.
I assume that you are referring to the singer and songwriter who calls herself MØ?
Mø is an old word deriving from the old-Norse word mær (maer), originallly the Gothic word mawi.
Mø means a young, unmarried woman; a virgin. Today the word is used almost only poetically.

It pains me greatly that I was never told about my family on either side. On my dad's side, I am German. I am Dutch on my mom's side. Her people came from Holland. That is the end of what I was told of my background.
I am quite interested in both these nationalities but don't know where or how to begin looking. I'm not that good at navigating the net. My mom's family did go to Holland but my mom was not able to go along since she was the wife of an overseas missionary; a choice she never regretted.
As a Dutchman, I never heared that. In the world there is confusion that the Dutch speak Dutch, and that is not Deutsch (German). I speak both, so no problem.
Only the 'gulplåter' on commercial vehicles.

@Whazzupdude: Yes, but it is still the Dutch that pretend to be danish.
I don't think it is of any use to discuss that, cause I don't know since when the Danes have yellow plates, we have them since 1978. I do know that people from the north province Friesland and Danes can understand each other very well.

I believe the word 'Dutch' come from English speaking confusing it with Deutsch - I wonder how the people of Nederland feel about that.

Incidentally, Americans speak a language derived from and related to English, but it's not English. ;)

I recently learned that part of my ancestry is Dutch. I thought my only connection was that my Dad was engaged to a young lady there when he returned home from WWII. It didn't last, difficult to stay close through the old mail system

And of course so many people, mostly though not exclusively Americans, have problems with the idea that Sweden and Switzerland are two distinct countries!!

Very strange. People in Britain often make the assumption that my parents (Polish) speak Russian.
