Are Republicans just as fickle as their new Commander-In-Chief ?

In 2013 , when Obama was President , a Wapo-ABC News poll found that only 22% of Republicans supported the US launching missile strikes against Syria in response to Assad using chemical weapons against civilians.

A new Post-ABC poll finds that 86% of Republicans support Trump's decision to launch strikes on Syria for the same reason.

Trump himself repeatedly warned Obama in 2013 not to attack Syria :

The President must get Congressional approval before attacking Syria-big mistake if he does not!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 30, 2013

AGAIN, TO OUR VERY FOOLISH LEADER, DO NOT ATTACK SYRIA - IF YOU DO MANY VERY BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN & FROM THAT FIGHT THE U.S. GETS NOTHING!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 5, 2013

President Obama, do not attack Syria. There is no upside and tremendous downside. Save your "powder" for another (and more important) day!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 7, 2013

I think it's a new tactic. If you support two diametrically opposed positions, at least you'll be right 50% of the time.

As far as Syria goes , it's becoming a new policy almost daily.
GlassDog · 41-45, M
It certainly seems that way. From outside the US, the impression given is of a government with no experience of government, trying to get up to speed as quickly as possible.

They do what they're told. "Us vs. Them." That's all it comes down to.
sighmeupforthat · 46-50, M
republican'ts are scum. always have been.
Mert5356 · 41-45, M
Democrats and Republicans support the current measure with more troops and arms that certainly will be sent there. Propaganda will be put forth in the media, but it will accomplish nothing except needless waste and destruction (which will not be seen by many average people).
Couldn't Obama think for himself, even with Bush to blame for all his problems...Trump is presidential, not Putin's lap dog..
Pherick · 41-45, M
trump is many things, presidential isn't one of them.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
Trump is an absolute neophyte , making it up as he goes along. He could never be presidential.

@Niburu: And now I get to put my 'drain the swamp' strategy to good use.

blocked again
not surprising though
I am despised by many of the intolerant politicos here
Turbineman40:
Trump is your President now support him. Hilary lost get over it
Wait---you mean the way the folks who became the Tea Party (not to mention Donald Trump himself) threw their support solidly behind President Barack Obama, when he won, TWICE ?

Yeah, just like that.

Everything looks different when the shoe is on the other foot.

pretty much this
sadly I had hoped we could get away from doing the same thing as the last 3 presidential administrations
but nope
Agreed.
Niburu · 51-55, M
You realize of course you could do the same cherry picking of articles for every political figure out there of every political party and show them flipflopping on all kinds of issues.
This is nothing new.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Niburu: If there were other quotes of his to the contrary then your charge might hold some water. Unfortunately there isn't.
Niburu · 51-55, M
@pezzza: ok fair enough
at what point does t be come fickle to change your mind on something when presented with evidence to change your position?
does he have to flip back the other way?
what's the time limit to differentiate between being fickle and have a change of heart?
is that the same thing to you?
are we just dealing with semantics then?
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Niburu: I simply found the figures quite astonishing. How they could go from 22% to 86% when presented with exactly the same scenario. There was more than just a little sarcasm when I used the word fickle.
As far as Trump is concerned though , there was no new evidence to change his position. Those quotes came from a time when the world was already outraged by Assad gassing his own people in precisely the manner that he most recently did. I thnk his change of heart might more likely be the result of other considerations rather than a sudden outpouring of compassion. This is the guy after all who said he would look those same children 'in the face' and tell them he wouldn't accept them as refugees.
Hawnheart · 61-69
So what happened to the when I'm president I'll bring home all the troops from war?
flossy · 41-45, F
It was the only reason why I voted for him.
Hawnheart · 61-69
But he did not fulfill his promise.
Don't get me wrong I don't condone the war but both republican's and democratic's say things they don't mean just to get your vote.
flossy · 41-45, F
@lifeasmakamae: I agree with you.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
The points you make are valid. Unfortunately though, there is polling that shows Democratic supporters have different attitudes to drone strikes, executive orders and the NSA when a Democrat is in charge.

We all have confirmation bias.
flossy · 41-45, F
Trump says what he needs to say in order to appease his audience (at the time) thus fulfilling his narcissistic needs. There is not an original-authentic bone in his body.

They'd have found a reason to complain about it. Remember, some managed to criticize Obama's removal of Osama Bin Laden, even though George W had stated that as his goal.
