Help please: What is a 'liberal' in US politics? Democrat or Republican or something different?

Reboot · 46-50, M Best Comment
This is the best I can come up with:

https://www.studentnewsdaily.com/conservative-vs-liberal-beliefs/

It's always been my understanding that "liberal" and "Democrat" went together but that's not always 100% correct.

Just read the article - thank you. Got it :)

@Reboot: No, the article is quite clear. Very similar to our Labour and Conservative (aka Tory) parties in many respects.
Liberalism and conservatism are political ideologies. Democrat and Republican are political parties. People often get them confused.

Liberals in U.S. politics are practically non-existent. Roughly 25 out of 535 legislators would be considered liberals.
Ynotisay · M
@Valentine: Yes it does. And now the pendulum is being propelled by digital technology. I think that will drive the pendulum even faster in the other direction.

@Ynotisay: have you looked at the offices right now not only does the conservatives have federal government control but many states. Democrats have lost over 1000 elected positions since 2010
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
dont count us out theres plenty of young conservatives
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
democrats is the main liberal party. thought the libeterian party and green party are also liberal
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
liberterian is not liberal
Ynotisay · M
@Mountainlady16: No. It's not liberal in the common definition. Libertarians want less government involvement. So they may be "liberal" about things like legalized weed, because they don't want the government telling them what to do, but they're not liberal in terms of things like social programs to help people. They're a bit more of "every man for himself."

@Ynotisay: okay i get what u mean

Democrats are generally considered liberal.
Republicans are the conservatives.
UnsureForNow · 41-45, M
And that's why I said generally considered liberal.
Though, I didn't make that distinction on the other side. Republicans are pretty much always conservatives now.
@UnsureForNow: I'm told there are still some moderates in the GOP. But one rarely hears from them nowadays.😊
UnsureForNow · 41-45, M
I don't doubt that, but they would definitely be more right leaning, at the very least.

A liberal is more or less, the right-hand half* of the Democratic Party, in US parlance.

*may in fact be the right 90%, it's kinda hard to tell.

In the U.S., liberalism has stood for social progress, equality and inclusion. Conservativism has supported traditionalists, nationalism, exclusion and preserving the "status quo".
There used to be both liberal and conservative factions in both parties. Republican liberals were abolitionists and those who supported Reconstruction and later, the Civil Rights movement. Southern Democratic conservatives ("Dixiecrats") established the KKK and Jim Crow legislation (enforced racial segregation). There are still liberal, moderate and conservative Democrats, but the 21st century GOP has run off most of its more liberal components.

For a little while, I thought I understood it. It obviously has different colours/factions/sects. Thank you though.

Reagan made the term a swear word.

liberal can be demo or repub.

they're the outspoken logic.
