RIP Martin McGuiness

Seen a lot of vile comments after the news of his passing. Yes he was an IRA man and whether you look at them as terrorists or freedom fighters he played a big part in having peace in Northern Ireland. He was the one who encouraged the IRA to accept peace and tried to serve his people well as Deputy First Minister.

To get a measure of the man look no further than to what he said when people in Derry were celebrating Thatcher's passing ; "The death of any person should never be a cause for celebration."

R.I.P. Martin

Not to mention the handling of the miners and Hillsborough.

@thatscottishguy: Gerry Addams is just about to speak if you put the news on.

Would watch it but busy watching the Scottish Tories and Labour hold hands.

He was a leader precisely because he was and IRA man. For one to find peace and understanding for the other side in his heart is a rare thing. He took what he knew of violence and struggle and tried to create peace from it. May the angels sing you to your rest, Mr. McGuinness.

Yes, I have to agree, he did a lot to improve Northern Ireland, once he eschewed the path of violence.

The fact that him and Ian Paisley ended up respecting each other shows how things have improved since the troubles.

A very mature post

Were you expecting the Celtic fan to just post "Up eh Ra!"?😂

@Louise: Interesting. One has to wonder whether it's the personal impact of this man's actions that keeps you from changing your mind, or whether it's qualities particular to this one individual that leads you to suspect he was insincere.

There's no answer, I'm just interested in the subject. I know I, for one, will advocate peace accords until I can't speak for places like the Middle East, Africa, etc., but if you mention Britain, all bets are off. Thanks for your input; it's nice when ideas can be exchanged without an argument.

@Louise: Well, I figured you weren't Irish, but you've got a pretty well-rounded view of the landscape for sure.

I agree, it's opinion and interpretation based on the facts available to or availed by that person. Political ideology and other debates never have to be personal in nature; something I wish a lot of others would come to understand.
