Your Reaction to M. Streep's Award Speech?

“This instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kinda gives permission for other people to do the same thing,” she said. “Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”

For? Against? In the middle?

That is exactly why no one watches awards shows. She was there to receive an award for what she makes a very comfortable living doing. She should have simply expressed her gratitude for that, and walked away.

@pinkrainbowkisses: Thank you.

I completely agree with her and her points about bullying, empathy and art. I thought she did it in a classy, heartfelt way. I don't take issue with celebrities being political. I may not always agree, but they're human beings with the right to their opinions, and they have a platform and a following. They can be a voice for change, for compassion, for logic and reason just as anyone in the public eye can be. Just because she's an artist doesn't make her any less credible to me. I take opinions of anyone who states them and filter them against facts and my own knowledge, experience and conscience.
@ChampagneOnIce: Thank you for your reply.
@Sacron22: I thought what she said is important.

Thanks. :)

For. And for the record - for people who find her comments political - human decency is not a political topic.

I can't remember the last time I watched a silly meaningless awards show.
Carver · 31-35, F
I hate it when celebrities bring up politics at award ceremonies. 🙄
Sacron22 · 56-60, M
i understand you feeling. There's an inappropriate element of privilege in it. But I agree with what she said.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
A lot of people dismissing the opinions of Streep because she is a rich and famous actress. Abuse of privilege etc.

By the same logic; reality TV billionaires should also keep their council, surely?
MartinII · 70-79, M
@Burnley123: And so far as I remember, nobody took any notice. That's my point. I have no problem at all with Streep saying her piece. I do have a problem with the media suggesting that her views have any authority. And by the way I agree with her views, as quoted in the original post.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@MartinII: Fair point then.
Sacron22 · 56-60, M
Heck of a good point!
katielass · F
She's an actress, she does what all kids do, pretends to be someone else. She's hardly an intellectual. Anyone who would look to her for direction has got to be dumber than dirt. But she is entitled to say whatever she wants. And her critics are entitled to criticize. I don't care. Have fun y'all.
Have you looked into any part of her personal life, education, charity programs and donations, accomplishments in her years at her career? None of it like a child pretending to be someone else. I guess you are an authority on intellectuals also ? "There are two things in life that are infinite, the universe and the stupidity of people and I'm not so sure about the universe." Albert Einstein
I guess he wasn't an intellectual either, just a scientist pretending to be one. It's obvious that you don't care. I am having fun, TY 8)
Over the top as you'd expect from a actress but theres an element of truth to it
Sacron22 · 56-60, M
A lot of truth. There is danger when a very powerful political leader mocks a minority.
Niburu · 51-55, M
@Sacron22: kinda like what we've been dealing with for the last 8 years
Sacron22 · 56-60, M
Not sure what you mean. Obama served all Americans. Good or bad job isn't the issuer here. He dedicated himself to all, was less 'activist' than JFK or LJB.@Niburu:
[c=#BF0080]I don't think it was the time or place for her to get her political views in. [/c]
@softspokenman: She gets a lifetime achievement award, by her peers, and he says that she is Over rated? Using position to bully ? I guess where she said it is more important than what she said, obviously "fell on deaf ears".
Sacron22 · 56-60, M
I see your point and agree. But to me the 'greater good' is served by calling out Trump, regardless of venue@pinkrainbowkisses:
[c=#BF0080]I was just giving MY opinion.[/c]
SunshineSwirl · 51-55, F
I think she rocked it.
Cierzo · M
I would be for it if she had said something like that too when Serbia, Libya or Syria were under attack. Now it is just opportunistic.

It would be nice too if movie and music industry tried to make some worthy art, not only speeches, manifestos and campaigns.
SW-User
Don't care.
MartinII · 70-79, M
The sentiments are fine. But I don't think the fact that Streep said them deserves any attention. She's an actress, that's all.

By the way, we all know she was referring to Trump, but did she actually say so?
Niburu · 51-55, M
I think she's bitching about things she imagines might happen and has no clue what the real world is like
She was talking about "The Real World".
Niburu · 51-55, M
@softspokenman: she was talking about her view of from her perspective and I don't see it
@Niburu: Look around you. You don't see any abuse of power and position or violence in this country or this world ?
Nonamefornow · 51-55, F
Nice of her saying those inspiring words in a peaceful and inspiring way. Just like how Mr De Caprio delivered his speech about global warming in a very eloquent manner.
Goralski · 51-55, M
Like she knows what's going on in d real world
VeronicaPrincess · 61-69
She, and her rich & powerful Hollywood brethren, should heed their own admonishments. 🤔

Couldn´t agree more...to say the least. I posted here my opinion about it.

At times i'm with 100%. In this case, the message was important and for me outweighs her inappropriateness.
