Scooby-Doo is now WOKE

When a Warner Bros. representative announced last week that “Scooby-Doo” character Velma Dinkley would be reprised as East Asian.

Original Velma in the orange turtle neck.

Seems, unnecessary and politically charged to me.

Leave the characters alone. If you want to do something, create an entirely new cartoon and make the characters whatever you want.

Next, Bugs Bunny will come back looking like Eddie Murphy
Actually this is the total opposite of being woke. They are stereotyping the short intelligent geeky girl to be asian.

Woke would be to give all the characters a different ethnic background and also change their gender preference. This is just stupid tokenism

@InOtterWords THATS what I was thinking too.. soon as I heard it..

I like that!
@Budwick never thought we'd agree on something 😅

Fucking stupid. I live in South East Asia and nobody is clamouring for this bullshit. What it is is ruining our childhood with unnecessary crap.
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@Longpatrol and why Velma? Is it because she's the nerd? You gonna make the nerd an Asian? Isn't that more racist and enforcing stereotypes?

Jinkies Warner, I can't find a single braincell

They're still doing Scooby Doo? I thought it was finished and only reruns. 📺👀
And the hoopla over "the unnecessary political charge" is free advertising.

Will it backfire? That discussion is free advertising as well.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@MistyCee Pissing off a 50 year old fan base is good advertising?

Is that what they teach in Marketing classes these days?
@Budwick It seems to be the game these days for corporations to politicize their advertising and take political stands.

I don't have any real affinity for Velma, and it looks goofy to me, but so did New Coke, and that worked out.

I guess you could call this "woke liberals owning the conservetards" in a way if you believe that the media has an overriding political agenda that goes further than profits, but I'm thinking management wants to make money for shareholders more.

And it does kind of make sense to make money off of the browning of America. They can always apologize if they calculated wrong.

@Stereoguy I'm not saying this cartoon is something that needs to be changed. But tradition is a poor defense against it.

@Human1000 Now that's what I'm talking about

Asian Daphne, a Hispanic fred, and a black Velma would be woke. Gotta get out of the stereotypes if that is your goal.

Honestly though, getting upset because a character suddenly has Asian ethnicity is a bit of a snowflake move.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@ViciDraco then make Scooby a Chihuahua too lol
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@iamnikki nah, mixed breed. We need love for those with mixed heritage as well.
