Why were gay people so rare in TV as characters before they became one of the topics?

Why did the media companies create the illusion that America had almost no homosexual people?
ScottR · 56-60, M
Because it wasn’t until 2003 that the Supreme Court struck down all state laws that criminalized homosexuality.
Stopmakingsense · 56-60, F
@ScottR what about all the murders on TV?
ScottR · 56-60, M
@Stopmakingsense I guess it’s less controversial to portray murder in a negative light.
Stopmakingsense · 56-60, F
@ScottR not even. War and murder are effective and not necessarily evil, on TV. Only on TV.
jackson55 · M
Now they create the illusion that 50% are.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@jackson55 Yes, because they've essentially been forced to put characters on that more closely represent the actual population. If we go back to the 50's, almost all TV characters were white which does not reflect our population.
jackson55 · M
@spjennifer I think Hollywood tend to overdo it just alittle.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@jackson55 I think if you're keeping track of what percentage of minority groups are portrayed in media, maybe the issue is yours.

Up until the 1990's and a bit later, there were still many Laws on the books against homosexuality, there still are in some places. Once a lot of those laws started to be abolished and being gay was no longer illegal, TV like the rest of the world began to adapt and accept. For Television it's all about selling advertising and since gay people of all sorts represent about 7-10% of the population, that was a huge market to tap into for them so they began to create characters that were gay in order to attract gay people to the TV shows so they could also watch the commercials and thus buy the stuff being advertised.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@Stopmakingsense Not sure what you're referring to about the murders?
Stopmakingsense · 56-60, F
@spjennifer definitely illegal, not even typically presented as negative-. TV violence and murder, misogyny, -. That was on. You still not getting what that has to do with what's missing?
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@Stopmakingsense Well, violence, like sex, sells and the average person appears to be fascinated with violence so that's what they show. Yes, murder is still illegal, homosexuality, no longer...
Television was behind movies as to homosexuality acceptance. Stricter regulations since the airwaves were accessible to anyone. Stereotyping was assigned to certain occupations. Male hairdressers and interior designers for example. If you’re an adult in that era, you got it.

Because it wasn't something you talked about in "polite society". Gay people were expected to stay in the closet or convert to heterosexuality.
It just wasn't mainstream. It's different now. It's been different. Where have you been.
Stopmakingsense · 56-60, F
@Spoiledbrat but TV wasn't always all mainstream, either.
Jessichaos · 26-30, F
Because gay men are still "icky" to some people. Lesbians, on the other hand, seem to be mostly A-OK.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
No idea what you are talking about, there are tons of gay people as TV characters.
