Do we need government?

As a citizen, do you need your government?

If we need government so much, why'd we hate them at the same time?
BlueVeins · 22-25
Yes. At the very most basic level, we need organized good guys who can use force against bad guys who like to use force, and the most effective way to finance that is through taxation. If you believe that that's true, then on some level you believe in government. Of course government plays a much wider variety of roles in the contemporary era, but to my best understanding, that's how it started out and everything that follows is just an expansion on that.

Edit:

We hate our government because it's highly ineffectual at its jobs. Like we need a gov't, but our gov't in particular is bought off by the rich and doesn't really serve the vast majority of its constituency well.

Yes we all need them whether we like to admit it or not. Without federal regulations the whole country would be the wild west- and as glamorous as movies make that look, it would not be a good time.
Zaphod42 · 46-50, M
Well it is nice to have the roads taken care of and specialized people to fight fires and crimes and other things that a good government does.
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
Trick question?

Without government, we wouldn’t be citizens. We would just be people
Graylight · 51-55, F
We need government, yes, as the working machinery of society. But when the government doesn't cater to specific whims and needs, we want to throw them out. Many here are likley to say they hate government because of corruption, but government is the organization we build. We hire, we fire, we dictate policy and procedure. Out currency in this organization is our vote and our voice.

The alternative is very, very messy.
America has a deep history of rugged individualism. We tend to complain about government restricting our freedom yet we take for granted the important role of government in creating an environment where we have choices.

@BiasForAction true... The only problem that most people have with freedom is that they never flip the coin to read what's on the other side... Responsibility
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
I mean, I need things that my government is responsible for, like maintaining the power grid or the sewer system or the roads. I guess if there were no government, but somehow, people with the knowledge and skill set to do those same things were to do them, it'd be a different story.

Not the one we currently have
Not the current one
its not the government

its corporate "duty" killed the beast

and the beating heart of all life

from the sea to firmament😱
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
Definitely.. Someone needs to be in control to organise things... You may not always like it or agree but it's necessary
OggggO · 36-40, M
Quite a bit and because they are deliberately refusing to meet those needs, respectively.
MOONAMONA86 · 36-40, F
Yes, it would be disorganised and chaotic without it
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
You need them else it would be like The Purge every day.
We'd be living in caves without government.

A necessary evil
SW-User
Often. There have been cases where our federal government has intervened on behalf of citizens to protect their civil rights from state oppression.
DDonde · 31-35, M
The ensuing power vacuum would get ugly quickly
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Apart from the cops and the Department of Health, we could probably survive.
