Never let a tragedy go to waste, right Texas?

People are struggling and dying.... make sure to charge as much as you can for access to literally life-saving electricity. Don't worry, there are caps in place to prevent gouging that is "too severe." Good thing we at least put some kind of caps on their greed. You're welcome! I hope you don't have any old relatives there on a small pension or disability. They won't be able to afford electricity for their medical devices. 😇
TEXAS, USA — With nearly 4 million Texans in need of power amid the winter storm that struck the state, demand for energy is exceptionally high. The demand has exceeded the supply that the state has to offer.

As a result, the Public Utility Commission of Texas held an emergency meeting on Monday where officials introduced an order that would adjust energy prices. The order said in part, "Energy prices should reflect scarcity of the supply. If customer load is being shed, scarcity is at its maximum, and the market price for the energy needed to serve that load should also be at its highest."

The order also stated that The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the organization that monitors Texas' power grid, should correct any past prices to reflect the current shortage of energy. However, there are caps in place in the order to make sure consumers are protected from skyrocketing prices.
I have family members in two locations in the Lone Star State. Both are currently without power or heat, and have been since yesterday. They are very concerned they won't get power back until after the next storm that is coming through later today and tomorrow.

I checked ERCOT's energy demand for 2020 (you can download hourly data for many past years on their website), and statewide demand is often higher than the current demand during the summer, when everyone is running air conditioning. This isn't a problem of energy capacity, but it is a good excuse to raise energy prices.
