UK massive tax hikes on the way

In a few of the Sunday papers today.
UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak is warning of major tax hikes in the new year as Britain starts paying back the debt borrowed for the Coronavirus.

Also in many papers the Prime Minister Boris Johnson suggesting that a ‘no deal’ with the E:U seems the most likely outcome and people should prepare for that possibility.

Internal Tory party squabbles are already simmering as many Conservative MP’s represent business interests openly.
One or two starting to sew seeds of discontent warning that the Prime Minister will be on shaky ground if he tries to push his Brexit deal through Parliament and it not being up to scratch.

Ironic that Boris Johnson said a deal would be easy as a major sell point for BREXIT. There was certainly no majority in our country for a no deal BREXIT. We sadly have a democracy based on lies at this sad time.

@4185philip It was always going to be impossible to navigate.

We may have been a major contributor but because of the length of time negotiating and then the Covid-19 problem on top and political indecisiveness from both Cameron and half of Parliament we are where we are !
I think comments in the papers today is an attempt to warn folk that a no deal looks the more likely outcome.

Then watch the Conservatives implode !

Could be a bloodbath

@4185philip it was meant to be "oven ready " and how he won the GE but he's backtracked on the deal he agreed and signed it really doesn't look good to other countries that we basically can't be trusted

@milkymum1 The whole BREXIT thing and the last general election was based on lies told to us. Now as you say they are wanting to break the, admittedly bad, treaty they signed. All such a mess feel so sorry for the people of Ireland for whom the EC has been a great uniting influence.

When the disaster that Brexit is kicks in then the covid will be blamed for that too. Both things are of immense harm to the economy and people..but Covid will mask the damage Brexit will cause..and is already causing.
milkymum1 · 31-35, F
@Entwistle That's why BJ is pushing ahead with Brexit so the impact won't be felt as much and covid will be blamed for everything...... a typical tory policy blame something or someone else
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@milkymum1 Yep. Brexit has already cost the nation £700 million per week since the referendum result came in. It and covid will be cited as the causes for the biggest austerity measures ever implemented in the UK.

The populist right is choking on its own contradictions. Brexit was sold on lies and half of the political class still feel obliged to pretend that a no-deal Brexit won't be a disaster. However, Johnson won an election on this basis and he either has to capitulate (a-la-May) or throw the economy under a bus.

I'm generally not aligned with British business and in fact, I'm a socialist. This is about facts vrs fiction though and team reality against team wishful thinking. Nobody has yet produced evidence for any benefit of a no-deal Brexit and its because they can't.

That’s the price you pay for fear of a virus with a 99% recovery rate.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Budwick It's not even a compromise.
It's putting a band aid over a bullet wound !
Budwick · 70-79, M
@Picklebobble2

So, refuse the band aid?
Just let let 'em bleed out?

Everyone hiding at home will not make the virus go away.
4185philip · 70-79, M
@Budwick Exactly wrong. The virus needs contact to survive.
smiler2012 · 56-60
🤫 will this include business tax or is it income tax and national insurance we will be hit with in a way much as i dislike boris and any tory administration he is rather caught between a rock and a hard place he has borrowed money to bail out business during corona virus heavily and now these business are going to be hit by big tax rises 🤷‍♂️ talking about kicking a man when he is down [@picklebobbie2]
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@smiler2012 Agree entirely !
To be fair what do you expect when the government has forked out as much money as it has in the past 9 months? It has to be from somewhere.

Spare a thought for Americans that got two payments in the whole period, while we have been getting 80% of our pay covered?
@MrBrownstone Even shitter then.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@SirenCalledLuce Americans got screwed over because for some reason they allowed their President to absolve himself of all responsibility.

Quite how you counter that (other than via the ballot box) has shown how the constitution fails its people in times of desperate need.
@Picklebobble2 True. What’s the point of being a citizen of the worlds largest economy when you can’t afford rent?
milkymum1 · 31-35, F
Well let's face it, it was always going to happen why would a Tory party go and tax non doms, make MPs, the Queen, other wealthy people, big businesses, pay thier taxes, and then why should an MP on a minimum of 80k a year be allowed expensive, bars and restaurants subsidised by the tax payer. The money is already there it's just a case of (as Boris says) a level playing field, evening things up!!!
Ingwe · F
we, as in our country
received so much covid money
and most of it was misappropriated
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Ingwe Where’s this ?
Ingwe · F
@Picklebobble2 dare I say? I may end up in jail
