You can only vote on one answer.
Can't you be both a dissident towards your country's government and a patriot?

No, I'm not talking about merely disliking just a ruling political party. I mean disliking your system of government and what it does/has done at its core.

If you despise the American government, does that necessarily mean you despise the American people?

I ain't American, but in general, disliking the government is the entire fucking point. The government is in service of the people, if they fail at that they oughta be yeeted.
You are not supposed to like officials, they aren't celebrities. They took their jobs because they want to shape a country they serve in. If this isn't in your interested you are supposed to dislike it.

I think America is doing a good thing by limiting how many cycles a President can serve. We had Merkel for a long ass time now and it's time for a change now.

@GeistInTheMachine I really love the idea of America. I'm very open about that. I love the freedom and the "American Dream". I truly identify with that, but for all my life it's been pretty much not that. Trump especially. He's the antithesis of what America should be. He's a businessman first... Capitalism isn't in favor of the little people like most people think. It's a easy way to justify unhealthy comfort and billionaires. Life isn't supposed to comfortable. No one should be a billionaire.

None of what's happening is what I imagine the ideal America to be. The ideal America is people being free. No one being disadvantaged by factors out of their control.

@G00GLE A lot of Americans would consider much of what you've just posted to be a sort of heresy, but I enthusiastically agree with you in part. Even though I don't agree with you fully, your opinion is really refreshing. Some Americans hate it, but I always like seeing an outsider's point of view. Well put. Thank you.

Also, prepare to catch some flak!
G00GLE · 22-25, M
@GeistInTheMachine I live for catching the flak! 😌
I always hope to challenge the status quo in some way, and if people take offense by it I know I succeeded.

No. A nation is not synonymous with its government or its president. Wanting to change things for the better does not make you opposed to, unsupportive of, or antithetical to the nation. Especially since this argument is often used hypocritically. The same people who denounce others for wanting to change things want things to change themselves. They just want different things to change (like outlawing abortion or deporting all illegal immigrants en masse).

@Dexterdextroid Some of those people may be anti-American, sure. I'm just saying that criticizing the government or calling for change per se is not anti-American. Some of the people doing so may be, though.
BlueRain · F
Anyone who despises the way the country is run should move.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@BlueRain A lot of people fought and died fighting authoritarian tyranny that doesn't allow one to stay and complain to make things better and advance the ideals of freedom.

Again, when are you leaving? You should like an anti-American authoritarian to me.

Your own logic is a contradiction. You can't even answer what I said pertaining to whether you left when a party or president you didn't like won.

You're nothing but a shallow anti-American hypocrite.

Ironic.
BlueRain · F
@GeistInTheMachine I love this country. I’m not leaving. You are shallow.

And have little life experience

I have noticed it’s always the dumbest Americans who accuse others of being anti-American, snowflake, commie, redneck etc

@SW-User Same. Reeks of McCarthyism.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
Yes of course we can love our country but at the same time be aware that our government doesn’t always have our best interests in mind
Psycho · 26-30, M
Most Americans are a representation of the American Government because the USA'S media and Government have brainwashed a majority of you guys since birth.

You are all human, the "I am an American" part doesn't deserve any consideration.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
The government has brainwashed us from birth coming from someone whose country decided to participate in protests because they were happening here and your people even started tearing y’all statues down too 😂👏@Psycho
Psycho · 26-30, M
@DeluxedEdition You hold that up as if it makes my point invalid but I don't deny my country is the same or any country for that matter.. enjoy being a sheepy.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Psycho you call me a sheep while your country literally copied my country just because you saw it on the tele
Peapod · 61-69, F
Being plugged in enough to see what is wrong in government is being "Pro American".
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@Peapod Yeah. Since its inception. It's what makes you a true citizen.
Peapod · 61-69, F
@GeistInTheMachine Thank-you. Sounds like you care too.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@Peapod I do, deep down.

Thanks.
You can definitely disagree with and dislike the government and love the people.

The right to disagree with the Government is kind of one of the core features of our Constitution, and that's one part I really like.
Shine · 22-25, F
The government serve the people, they are not the people
Shine · 22-25, F
@DeluxedEdition Not with Mr.Trump in charge!
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
#kag! @Shine
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@DeluxedEdition Dude, Trump and the GOPer maniacs have been in charge for years now. With majority.

@RightSaidFred Too long of a laundry list, and I'm quite out of practice and much more checked out when it comes to politics, lately.

Basically, I agree with American ideals, care about the American people, but think that the government is corrupt, largely controlled by traitors, tyrannical and exceedingly immoral.

@RightSaidFred Yeah, I have that issue with most governments. It's just that the one I'm under is the most powerful.
strongbow · 46-50, M
No, but for hoping that the country crashes and burns and fails is completely anti-american
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@strongbow They’re so fucking dumb it hurts them to what do they think they’re going to do
