Supreme Court Rules Electors Must Vote As Their States Voted

Looking forward to hearing the left cry in their Post Toasties
Eternity · 22-25, M
The electoral college serves no purpose in the modern world save to create the illusion of democracy within an oligarchical system.

The whole reason it was created is due to horseback being the fastest means of communication between states at the time.

It should have been chucked as soon as we invented the telegraph

So we can at least all agree that what she just said was, at the very least, ignorant. Right?

Like objectively?

Come on now. Surely since we all claim to be rational minded adults, we know that even LGBTQ and criminals that can vote combined wouldn't make up enough of a voting majority to dominate the country?

Give me even but a shallow breath O more perfect union. One whimper of a pulse. A flicker yet of light in your weary eye.

Why the hell did this have to go all the way to SCOTUS!? It's common sense but because liberals are desperate they have to waste time and money!
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@curiosi Common sense democrats is an oxymoron
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
I'm not sure you understand the ruling!! 🤦‍♀️
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Kwek00 Give it up. It's too late to change the laws in 57 states to throw the election to punxsutawney joe
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 I don't know where that comes, but what ever Sporter 🤷‍♂️
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
@sunsporter1649 The "left" will be pleased, with the ruling. The right won't!!
graphite · 61-69, M
Good thing we have the electoral college or NY, LA and Chicago would elect the president every time. It would like being conservative in California or NY now except nationwide: You don't have a vote that counts.
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@graphite The best cognitive measure will be to see him on stage with Cheeto Benito
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M

@IstillmissEP and if a rioter doesn't have a mask the mayor will furnish one

Why would they cry?

From what I just read, this was based on people refusing to cast their vote for Clinton, after she won the state's popular vote, most notably, Washington electors voting for Colin Powell instead of Clinton.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Viper This is one of those things where both parties are generally happy with the outcome.

It’s only Alexander Hamilton that’s spinning in his grave.
Viper · M
@QuixoticSoul Yeah, exactly

Also, I was just trying to see who this would of helped last election.

Also since both sides are happy, why surprise at a 9-0 ruling?

This is really much ado about nothing.

Only one comment thread below seems to address what was actually decided.

The court issued no opinion about the pact between states to direct the electors to vote according to the national vote, because it hasn’t happened yet, it cannot be challenged and enough states haven’t signed on yet.

As far as I can tell, there’s nothing to see here.

But this is SW. That’s par for the course
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@JoeyFoxx The case actually laid groundwork to allow states to punish those that don't vote in accordance with the rules set out by their state - including any provisions regarding the popular vote.
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@QuixoticSoul yeah. That’s how I read it too.

But I haven’t seen anyone with a legal mind talk about that.

My son is an attorney.

I am not. :)

@JoeyFoxx "Washington moved to fine Peter Bret Chiafalo and two others $1,000 after they voted for former secretary of state Colin Powell when the electoral college convened after the 2016 election. They had pledged to vote for Hillary Clinton, who won the state’s popular vote."

"As the court’s opinion noted of the 2016 contest: “Only seven electors across the Nation cast faithless votes — the most in a century, but well short of the goal."
OggggO · 36-40, M
No, they ruled that states can pass laws punishing faithless electors. Nice try though.

You're probably overestimating the left if you expect too much crying too soon.

I'm guessing they're worried about "bigger" things and don't have the time to spend to deal with this one until it bites them.
@sunsporter1649 Bud brought up 2016.

Trust me, I'd prefer to forget it.

I believe all but a handful of states have that law anyway

Faithless electoral college members must keep the faith. I love it!
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
It's a win! Like losing the House and like North Korea not dismantling their nuclear capabilities.
