Is the statue shit going to work ?

With four months left to salvage his re-election campaign , President Donald Trump has decided to pivot heavily to culture-war bluster and hard-right posturing. A major part of that pivot appears to be turning his anger on people who don’t like the same statues he does and comparing those enemies to Nazi “fascists.”

Shockingly, there are some in Trump’s political orbit who aren’t convinced this tactic will move voters as much as the president seems to think it will. They see the “pivot” as Trump simply continuing to rile up a conservative base that will not, by itself, deliver him a second term.

Two individuals close to the president told The Daily Beast last week that they believe devoting so much time and energy to defending lifeless statues—a kick that started with sticking up for ones honoring racist dead Confederates—will likely fail to help rejuvenate his sagging 2020 campaign and close the wide polling deficits that former Vice President Biden has opened up.

Well of course I hope it does not work. But whether or not it gets him re-elected, it deepens divisions and conflict in the USA and that is terrible. It also is one more distraction from the wider damage Trump's administration is doing to the planet such as accelerating climate change.

@Cinnaman I'm still waiting for those ice bergs to show up off Miami Beach

Still waiting for this to work?

The only people still supporting Trump are too afraid to admit to pull out now or maybe they're just actual racists.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@G00GLE A combination of the two.
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
I think it's inconsequential either way. I don't think statues really are at the core of anyone's political values. What we have instead is a political climate of extreme racial tension, historic levels of social unrest, highly polarized messages everywhere we look, economic insecurity and unprecedented unemployment, record high personal and national debt, a horribly mismanaged public health crisis, and so much anxiety and uncertainty that the president is doing nothing to assure our confidence about.

There are a lot more important things to deal with than what people want to do with statues
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@TinyViolins I agree with all that. But this statue nonsense is literally all he's talking about atm. I really don't get it. Are his advisers really that timid that they can't convince him to talk about something else ?
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
trump surrounds himself with ass kissers and thinks the crowds at his rallies represent the majority of American people. January could be interesting.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@Crazywaterspring As in January, when he refuses to leave office and unleashes his remaining cultists to commit violence?
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
Yeah, but as a life-long New Yorker, he is just trying to preserve his Confederate heritage. Too bad, no one will tell him New York was not part of the Confederacy.
Carla · 61-69, F
That is as deep as trump gets.

I wont just be wildly indignant about hideous Confederate statues being removed...I will build more statues of people I deem heroic. A garden! Yes a garden of statues! That'll show those evil dems!

Trump is a baffoon.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Carla I wonder if his garden will include a statue of himself ? 🤔
Carla · 61-69, F
@RodionRomanovitch highly likely.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Carla The democrat party, bringing you insurrection since 1861, and under the same name yet
I'm more surprised that an incumbent is running on fear of chaos, really, than I am that Trump seized on this particular issue.

I guess its so central to his base that he can't give it up, but its really transparent and I'm not surprised that it has the money guys behind him worried and looking to hedge their bets.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@MistyCee Or is it just another deflection ? Anything to get people to stop realising just what a pig's ear he's made of the pandemic response.

I told you not to be stupid, you moron.

@SW-User Such eloquence

The daily beast? Because I too get my news from the McDonald’s equivalent to news
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@RodionRomanovitch You are entitled to your opinion, as long as it agrees with mine
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@sunsporter1649 Well tell me what it is then. I might even surprise you.
SevIsPamprinYouAlways · 56-60, F
In a word,no. During a pandemic killing thousands and an economic depression nobody gives a shit about a bunch of lumps of metal and stone.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Except left-wing nut jobs like you
@sunsporter1649 Nope. Just your clown in chief who thinks statues and Tik Tok will salvage the chaos he presided over.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
Evidence so far shows its not working. Its a good stategy for his base but swing voters care about the virus and the economy.
