Why do you admire the USA?

Why do you dislike the USA?
What have we done very well?
What have we done which you think is bad? Top thing, good and bad.

Admire: Constitutionally-guaranteed freedom of speech & religion, very well-protected and well-maintained national parks, very prestigious academic centers, and unusually robust courts system
Dislike: Scant social services despite ample wealth, dreadful disparities in public education, heavy-handed justice system that produces shitty outcomes, and lackluster environmental regulations

@BlueVeins Your admiration and criticisms are fair and balanced. Part of our history of freedom has many many people believing that the government has no place in personal and social matters. Taking money from one person to give to another "lazy" or "careless" person makes some Americans feel robbed especially because who gets to decide when someone needs that assistance.

It's a third world country with iPhones! 🤷‍♀️
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@Harriet03 I agree but don't agree when others feel superior. All countries have both good and bad. The USA has many qualities that place it clearly in the first world status.
Our ideology is hard for outsiders to understand as well. If your countries had never had war on your own soil your ideology might look closer to ours than you might imagine

I was there for 8 months. I think it’s gold plated. You have talentless people like the Kardashians always in the spotlight to support this idea that capitalism is the greatest thing in the world, and that anybody can become rich. While also hiding the behind the scenes.

Most average people have no savings and lots are even in debt. I watched somebody take an Uber to a hospital because they couldn’t afford to take an ambulance. The standard of living for a good chunk of the population is worse than in countries that the POTUS would call a shithole.
NenaRussa · 22-25, F
The fact that 50 million people don’t have health insurance is pretty troubling. Going to the hospital could put someone in debt for the rest of their life. The fact that the richest 10 people in the country have more wealth than the bottom 90% (or something like that). The fact that a lot of the state governors and the president believe that the stock market is more important than hundreds of thousands of lives.

America worships its celebrities to prop up the story of the “American dream” but it doesn’t care about the average citizen.
I don't know many Americans who spend more due to low interest rates
Just google the terms "low interest rate" and "economy" and then come back when you can make a slightly more informed argument.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@SW-User I am informed on this issue but perhaps I did not explain myself very well.
What I am trying to say is that spending or saving is more so about optimistic outlooks regarding the economy, job prospects, inflation and the like rather than low interest rates.

In my original response to you I already did mention that of course if we want to buy a house or a car or some other major purchase we might feel a greater urgency to buy it when interest rates are low but the percentage of household savings is not directly correlated to the percentage of interest rates.

Americans have been saving more for the past 12 plus years regardless of interest rate.
The USA personal savings rate rose from 3.7% in 2007 to
6.5% in 2010 to 8.2% in the first half of 2019.

The interest rate is a minor factor in how much Americans tend to save. Maybe very wealthy Americans consider the interest rate when deciding to save or spend, to the average low and middle income American it is not a factor what so ever.

I do not "admire" the US or dislike it, per se ... There are bits and pieces to like and dislike, you know. As for governments, or politically speaking, I dislike its constant interference in other countries' business and starting wars here and there, especially in my area, and where I come from. As for people, I think the majority are cool and fine people. I think it is a powerful country and its contribution to the world should be acknowledged. Overall, I hold no negative feelings towards the US as a country or towards Americans - Even if I very much disagree with its political position (whether democrats or republicans are in office, but it is always worse when it is republicans).

Bad thing : US foreign policy arrogance which is usually similar regardless of whether the Reps or Dems are running the show.

Good thing : The music and musicians.
I think it's a beautiful country and I like the whole freedom thing.
Like every country there's good and bad.

I am not American, so don't take my opinion too seriously.I like pre-WWII US. Since then, it has become the American empire.

I really like that they used to be a country where your will, talent, and hard work played a huge role in your success or failure in life, a very meritocratic country.

I hate the American empire and its interventionism in foreign affairs. And the fact that it has become a corporatocracy.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@Cierzo If you know our history we have always been a nation of Empire and with these same ideals. In elementary school they would teach us about the great founders belief in manifest destiny.
We were able to kick into 3rd gear after WW II due to Britain handing us the baton.
It’s the last stand.. once the US falls we’re all screwed..

I am not fond of the current administration.
Your handling of foreign policy has been woeful for the last 50 years or so...I'm not a big fan of the saturation of the world with your fast food chains and tv marketing either...
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@Mandalorian As an American I absolutely hate the proliferation of fast food and our pop or hip hop culture all over the world.
I went to Jamaica a long time ago and every driver we had would switch to rap music and start talking to me about the latest rappers and try to take me to McDonalds.
Why do other countries lap up USA culture so much?
@REMsleep I have no idea..

...but I did forget to mention that gospel, bluegrass, country, blues, jazz, soul, funk etc .. are very much welcome global influences.. 👍

In addition to what has been said I'm saying thank you to the American military for chasing off aggressive Chinese naval units near Malaysia and Taiwan.
