No one "party" ended slavery. Republican and Democrats were not what you think they were 150 years ago and like most things, any real movement takes time. Slavery wasn't just "ended" on a Tuesday afternoon. And let's not forget they many, many southerners and conservative who made sure the violent and racists Restoration period lasted as long as possible.

But if you, with a political party filled with white nationlists, racists, conservative and the religiously intolerant, want to claim superiority. go right on ahead. history has a way of taking care of these kinds of things.
