155 sailors on USS Theodore Roosevelt test positive for coronavirus, 42 percent of all Navy infections

Yeah, the ship from which the commander was relieved of his duty for sounding the alarm and asking for help.

Time to shelve politics and vanity, people. Time to save lives. Yours and others.

The New York Times reported that he tested positive for COVID-19. When you put someone in charge of a $5.625B nuclear powered aircraft carrier (in today's $s), with a cargo of $7B worth of aircraft, and an additional $1-2B worth of military hardware, and 2,700 sailors, and ignore his warnings, don't expect him to ignore his mission, and his crew.

I wish him well, along with a speedy recovery. His crew's reaction said it all.

Who was the idiot who OK'd the port call to Vietnam on MARCH 4th?

Someone with the rank a lot higher than captain, for sure.
quitwhendoneM
@beckyromero No. A military is for defense, not power projection.

You're a militarist. You want a military for offensive purposes, not security. You want a military for power projection (to bully and control the world), not to protect American soil and souls.

And if you ever call me anything with the name Trump again or accuse me of being a Trumpanzee, I'll kick your hawk ass.

I WANT a military that has great offensive capabilities.

This isn't the NFL. In this case, a good offense is also a good defense.
You want a military for power projection (to bully and control the world), not to protect American soil and souls.
Who said anything about "bullying" or "control"?

And, besides, there is a reason why we are on the United Nations Security Council.

Oh dear. I seem to have hit a nerve.

@beckyromero Unfortunately, we have traditionally used our military to bully and control.

Take the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Bush clearly lied about the purpose. He knew there were no WMDs there. 600,000 Iraqis were killed.

Take the 1989 invasion of Panama. Bush initially said he would never invade Panama because the old days of bullying Central American countries were long over. Then the media kept accusing him of being weak. So he invaded. Over 500 Panamanians died so Pres. Bush wouldn't continue to look weak in media reports.

These kinds of things have happened over and over. It needs to STOP.

What could go wrong when your Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly is a bean counter from PricwaterhouseCoopers - the dirtiest CPA firm in the world?
The captain was right. The idea that they could even hush up a pandemic on a floating city where social distancing is physically impossible was idiotic to even contemplate.

Its a hoax, blah, blah, blah.
Fake news, blah, blah, blah.
That seems to be the party line. 馃槒

Fake news, this can only happen in China, eh Trump fans?

Hope none of the boomers have it.

@Tastyfrzz

Hopefully, the ones at sea have stayed at sea. They are usually on six-month deployments.

He wasn't relieved of his duties simply for sounding the alarm. He did not follow chain of command. He sent his written concerns to many people which in turn caused a leak of this sensitive info to the media. It is a nuclear powered aircraft carrier and must be protected.
@REMsleep First point that is mostly a myth based on early data from China where most older males are heavy smokers.

about half of all cases in NY are under the age of 45 and many are on ventilators. A large ship is also probably the worse case scenario unless you want to maximize infections. Also with bed shortages death rates skyrocket. I would be curious what the sickbay ICU bed count to personnel ratio is.

And again the only evidence we have that protocol was not followed are a bunch of people trying to cover their own asses.
NorthwestM
@REMsleep There is a protocol for what should be done if you a hand infection. There isn't one for this thing. His primary responsibility is to his mission, which includes his sailors and the distinct possibility that he will not be able to carry on his mission, if its crew is disabled.
beckyromero36-40, F
@REMsleep
It is a nuclear powered aircraft carrier and must be protected.
And that's what he was trying to do.

A CVN with half the crew seriously sick wouldn't be very effective in time of war, now would it?
beckyromero36-40, F
The captain went over his superior's head because obviously that admiral in charge of the carrier task force (and who was onboard the Roosevelt) didn't give a sh*t.
JaggedLittlePill46-50, F
I am so floored by this. I just have no words left.

My condolences to OP
