We need to think about Africa.

There is an understanding that the virus doesnt like hot weather but (given the number cases in southern Italy and Florida) this is a dangerous assumption.

Africa has much less capacity to deal with this than the west and they are getting cases. While the developed world itself is struggling, we at least have facilities or the capacity to make them. African countries can't borrow money and dont have the industrial capacity so others will need to help them.

This is from a humanitariam point of view and also self interest. If we deal with our owm crisis, we can still get the virus back from others as coronavirus does not care about borders.

This is indeed a planet-wide problem.

And the results are going to be horrifying because all nations were ill-prepared to deal with this pandemic.

If the virus is inhibited by warmer weather, it will start infecting more in the Southern Hemisphere during their winter months and the reappear in the Northern Hemisphere for another go around September. We're a long way from this being controlled.

By the way, I just saw Boris on TV. He looks awful. Maybe his case isn't as mild as reported.

@windinhishair I agree. Hes obviously said that to the public.

but what about the countries that are already infected? iran is currently suffering a lot because of the sanctions put on them limiting their medical capabilities, and now newly infected third world countries like syria. i think syria would fall apart if it gets worse but hey the US’s enemies aren’t worth helping?

@tutku Look, i agree with you on that completely.

You do know that Southern Europe has winters, right? I'm currently in Barcelona, which is basically on the same latitude as Rome. We've had temperatures of 14 celsius (and below) for weeks.

Senegal has had 119 cases, Ghana has had 136 and Ivory Coast, a mere 96. I didn't bother looking up the rest of the African countries.

The Guardian used to be a newspaper of substance. Now it churns out this??????

@room101 I do know southern europe has winters.

The latest research ive read on the bbc says that the virus survives and spreads in humans at any temperature though dies quicker in surfaces in hot weather. Its been mostly spread by humans though.

I do think that Larry Elliot makes good points, even if you dont think so. I wish you well.

It has crossed my mind occasionally - most of what we hear about COVID-19 concerns the English-speaking countries and Europe. I haven’t seen a single news item about Africa, Asia (except China), and South America.

🤔

There is a user on here from South Africa, he announced last week that his country was going on lock down as a precautionary measure. Looks like they are thinking ahead.
