Here We Go Again with Trump

He’s lost my support. I’ve gritted my teeth at some of his policies, and still decided to support him because there is no other option, but he’s gone too far with denaturalization of American Citizens. People who came here legally, have been tax paying citizens, some for many decades, or a lifetime, but now they can be stripped of their citizenship and deported for falling foul of the law, in some way. This is not right, and I can no longer support him.

I know I’ll get the Right wing haters, who will say, “you couldn’t be a real Trump supporter,” and the Leftists who will say, “I told you so,” but that doesn’t matter. To the conservatives (and I am one), I say that I’m not a sheep, and when I see authoritarianism like this, I’m done. To the Leftists, I would never support one of your crowd because of their authoritarian policies. It seems Left or Right, authoritarianism is the name of the game, no matter who is in power.

Typical small minded person. At first glance I’d say you are a hateful Leftist, because that’s how many Leftists respond, but I’ve seen enough on the Right to know there are plenty on my own side too. Whatever your politics, you can only insult, and don’t respect people who can think for themselves. @waleskinder
BlueVeins · 22-25
are you gonna vote in your state or territory's primary?
Carissimi · 70-79, F
I don’t vote democrat, and as far as I know, Trump is the only one running on the conservative side. @BlueVeins
BlueVeins · 22-25
@Carissimi There are one or two Republicans running against Trump, and there'll definitely be a more diverse race in 2024.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
I’d vote for Rand Paul, but I doubt he’s running. @BlueVeins
plungesponge · 41-45, M
Trump wasn't a bad choice vs Hillary when people didn't know how he'd govern. Now everybody knows he makes things up as he goes and Hillary is gone, so the sensible thing is to vote for someone else. It's a pity Mitt Romney isn't running, he seems like a responsible leader with principles.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
@plungesponge Most are Globalists, so still leaves me, and those like me in the same situation...politically homeless.
plungesponge · 41-45, M
@Carissimi What did you think of Ron Paul?
Carissimi · 70-79, F
@plungesponge He’s no longer in politics, but I respect Rand Paul, and a handful of other Republicans, but I don’t care for most of them.

Although I am not surprised by the hate thrown your way I still find it disheartening. Disheartening because so many of our fellow citizens are supporting demagoguery over American ideals.

This article talks about the new policy

Joseph H. Hunt, head of the Justice Department’s civil division, said
"The Denaturalization Section will further the department’s efforts to pursue those who unlawfully obtained citizenship status and ensure that they are held accountable for their fraudulent conduct,”
SinlessOnslaught · 26-30, M
Kudos for being a free thinker. Yeah, most people here like to nitpick about every post.

Buuuuuut what did he do, exactly? How are legal citizens being deported?
It's not a new policy, although there are fears that it may be used more and more broadly.

And it's not just a knock on the door and deportation back to wherever. It's a trial process. Under President Obama, for example, an accused war criminal was deported because, in addition to transgressions elsewhere, she lied in her application for citizenship.
@Carissimi I understand.
jeancolby · 31-35, F
@Carissimi He's talking about felony's that immigrants hid prior to becoming citizens.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
Well, those green card holders never committed felonies, and were not subject to deportation at the time of their convictions. However, 20-years later they retroactively deported them. Thats against an amendment. I can’t recall which one. So do you think I trust the government with this? No, I don’t. I see how it starts with one thing then expands to minor things, affecting ordinary people. @jeancolby
The small government part of conservatism is what I've always found most attractive. I'm willing to surrender some of my liberties in exchange for living in society, but I want every bit accounted for.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
Unfortunately, the small government part is no longer small, but quite oppressive. One can live in a society that’s free, which is what this country is founded on. We shouldn’t have to give up our liberties. @MistyCee
@Carissimi we shouldn't have to give up any of our liberties?

I'm not sure that makes sense to me.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
Then I can’t help you, if you don’t understand why. It’s obvious to me. Have a nice evening. @MistyCee

Denaturalization has been around for a long time. A quick check says the last was in 2010.

It's not done by executive order but by a legal process that runs through the courts and it's based on acts of fraud during immigration and the citizenship process. That is, people who lied when filling out the documents for immigration and citizenship. But while that may be the legal basis, it's usually preceded with other misdeeds.

It's most common use I believe was after WW2 when naturalized citizens were discovered to have been members of the Nazi SS or had committed war crimes. It was also popular when trying to get rid of "Mafia" type crime bosses.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
But they are changing, or adding something to it, like if a naturalized citizen gets in trouble with the law, for whatever, they can be denaturalized and deported. It’s never been like that before, and I’m against it. A citizen is a citizen. Imagine the slippery slope and the political weaponization that can come from this. It’s Trump’s administration making these changes. I fully supported him cleaning up illegal immigration because this is where the problem is, but he’s cracking down on legal immigration too, even preventing babies born abroad to U.S. citizens from becoming an automatic citizen. Even if born to a military family based abroad. I don’t agree with it. @Heartlander
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@Carissimi That's why we have a division of power. As we all remember from the Illian Gonzalez episode, the executive branch has considerable power over immigration. But not so over citizens without due process, and in this situation it would be out of his hands. Regardless of what he says, it really has no teeth.

I've never agreed 100% with any president. But while Trump mouths off about denaturalizing, the people on the other side of politics are demanding that the border be taken down, all illegals giving amnesty, and anyone who just walks across the border be given benefits and the right to vote.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
To be fair, they should start investigating Melania and her parents. That way no one can say there is nepotism and it will prove Trump’s fair-mindedness.
I can't support a person who is ANTI LGBTQ+ .
One that partners with religion to see bills that discriminate get passed.
226 bills forwarded just this past year.
Where is the separation of church and state? To trump there is none.

To me it's anyone but trump.

Carissimi · 70-79, F
I am anti- LGBTQ activists.@Elandra77 They do not represent the interests of gays or trans people, but hold a political ideology of hate and destruction. When they start representing white, gay, conservative males and females, and black, gay conservatives, and stop promoting hormone blockers for children, I may change my mind.
SmartKat · 56-60, F
We can broadly agree on something political, then. Authoritarianism (left OR right) is terrible.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@SmartKat

It's like the swing of a pendulum. How many times have we seen countries flee from the clutches of a right wing dictator and into the arms of a left wing dictator?

I'm not a Conservative or a Republican- and I'll wait and see before I get offended

You have to follow politics to a degree to know what’s going on, or else you’ll believe the propaganda. @AnukBinary
