How do you think Kennedy would have handled the Vietnam war and civil rights movement?

BobbieT · M
He escalated the war. Kennedy tripled the amount of American economic and military aid to the South Vietnamese and increased the number of U.S. military advisors in Indochina. Bobby Kennedy’s tenure is best known for its advocacy for the civil rights movement.

My answer is why is @SW-User lurking with that 🍑 she's displaying? 😄

We don't really know what his presidency would have been like. We glamorize him and the Kennedy family, so who knows.

@SW-User indeed you are a🍑

@Master5dad true, I suspect he'd be good with issues that came his way but he'd also make mistakes like all presidents do.

@JAYS21 I doubt if he would have pulled troops. He helped escalate the war
@BobbieT but do you think he would have pulled out once it got to the point it did which LBJ?

He got involved in Viet-Nam, had he lived, who knows. Civil rights, again, who knows. Johnson succeeded him, and then go from there on both Viet Nam and Civil rights. Judge for yourselves.

I have no idea how he would've handled Vietnam, tbh. I think that neither Johnson nor Kennedy wanted to have troop presence in Vietnam, but they couldn't withdraw forces while there was a Communist threat there. It wasn't politically viable for the Democrats to let South Vietnam collapse to a Communist regime. That's how I have interpreted it.

@DDonde Five consecutive US presidents escalated our involvement in Vietnam. Geopolitical imperatives have powerful momentum of their own.

It’s hard to say on Vietnam . On civil rights he would have tried the same as LBJ, but not as effectively.

if my aunt had balls she would be my uncle.

Largely the same, I’d say.

It would have been very bold for any President to cut and run in 1965 when LBJ started sending in thousands. Not many thought the war was unwinnable in 1965. Democrats still stung from "Truman lost China," too. JFK had the lesson from the Bay of Pigs, but that was a stupid mission on its face.

About Civil Right, I don't think Kennedy couldn't have gotten it through. It would have been watered down somehow.
