Brits, do you think the Uk should have a December election?

And how would you vote?
room101 ยท 51-55, M
Our current Parliament is as ineffective as a condom thatโ€™s been wrapped around a pin cushion. Having said that, what will a general election actually achieve?

Is there a raft of new candidates waiting in the wings that have the sense and fortitude to deal with Brexit?

No. There is not. Ergo, it will be the same ineffective bunch sitting in the House of Commons.

Should Corbyn realise his hearts desire and become PM, will he finally get off the fence and actually deliver what was voted for in the 2016 Referendum?

No bloody chance.

The UK is in a stagnant quagmire and the only way out is to deliver Brexit. I donโ€™t even care anymore if itโ€™s with or without a deal.

Get it done and letโ€™s all get on with our lives.
room101 ยท 51-55, M
@Burnley123 What did I say? What is it that I think is so easy? My plea to get it done? It was simply that, a plea. And like many pleas, they generally go unanswered.

My point is in the body of my reply to your question ie should we have a general election? My answer, NO! Because it would achieve nothing.

I didn't bother with the second part of your question because I think that you already know the answer.

But for those who haven't read my ramblings before.........................despite being a life-long Labour voter, I would rather not vote at all than vote for Corbyn's Labour Party.

As to your comment about worker protections (and this latest "leaked memo" or whatever the hell it is), I have told you this a number of times in our previous discussions: in January 2017, Theresa May put it to Parliament to ratify all EU Law into British Law. Her motion was carried unanimously. As was her motion to trigger Article 50 by the way.

Therefore, if Boris wants to erode worker and environmental protections, he has to present a bill(s) to Parliament which then has to go through Parliamentary due process. Given the state of our politics since our first post Blair election, do you honestly think that Boris (or any configuration of a future government) would have the majority to push such a bill through?

Sorry Burnley but that's yet more nonsensical scare-mongering.
Burnley123 ยท 41-45, M
@room101 I hope you are right. I fear you are not.
room101 ยท 51-55, M
@Burnley123 If I'm wrong, then it means that the relevant existing laws would have been changed by Parliamentary due process. Something which Corbyn and co are a part of.

Think on that for a bit!
walabby ยท 61-69, M
I think the Brits should have another referendum, but, heck, it's none of my business...
ArtieKat ยท M
@walabby How many referenda does one need to get a satisfactory answer? Best of three (or more)?
walabby ยท 61-69, M
@ArtieKat I dunno, it's not my country, but to do something as disruptive and significant as Brexit on a majority of 1.6 percent doesn't seem very wise. Maybe the first result should be ratified ?
adorbz ยท 26-30, F
hmmmm
I think we need one but Iโ€™d rather have the current parliament than the majority of boris blockheads that an election would bring.
I donโ€™t know how I feel about Labour at the moment but I think Iโ€™ll vote for them anyway because they have more chance of ousting my brexity MP than anyone else
Nyloncapes ยท 61-69, M
@Burnley123 do you think after the EU grant the extension Corbyn will agree for election after he has called for one so many times, he can't find any more excuses can he
Burnley123 ยท 41-45, M
@Nyloncapes I think they were right to get an extension first. How can you have a Brexit election whilst Brexit is going through?

I want an election and I've heard that corbyn does. Mps should stop messing around.
Nyloncapes ยท 61-69, M
@Burnley123 you know I am for leave , but I did want to leave by 31 at of October but I do think they did need more time to read the agreement thoroughly never thought I would say that,
MartinII ยท 70-79, M
There must be an early election. The present parliamentary situation is farcical. Of course it wouldnโ€™t have happened without the Fixed Parliament Act, or the, shall we say innovative, rulings of Speaker Bercow.

Traditionally, winter elections were regarded as benefiting the Conservatives, because working-class people found it more difficult to get to the polling station in bad weather. This time, with the middle classes supporting Corbyn and the working classes supporting Brexit (over-simplification, obviously) it may be the other way round.

As to how I will vote, Conservative. But as I live in Dianne Abbottโ€™s constituency, it wonโ€™t make any difference.
MissTaken ยท 36-40, F
Will Santa and the Elves be allowed to vote ?๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿป
ArtieKat ยท M
@MissTaken Nice one, Sam! ;-)
Nyloncapes ยท 61-69, M
@MissTaken yes if there for remaining in the EU they would be allowed to vote parliament and bercow would make sure of that

@Bootsiebaby That's highly unlikely according to the current polls - 15% ahead last weekend

@ArtieKat The Boris strategy relies on a divided opposition and winning a majority on 35%
SW-User
Yes .. the Brexit extension will be granted next week and that's when either opposition MP's agree or the PM goes to the Palace and ask her Majesty to invite the Leader of the opposition to form a government. Jeremy hasn't got the support and where all off to the church , school hall or community centre to elect our next Government
Burnley123 ยท 41-45, M
@SW-User This Parliament can't resolve Brexit one way or another and there needs to be an election. Jeremy wants one but his MPs are resisting.
thatscottishguy ยท 26-30, M
I want one asap. I will vote SNP. Then I want them to call indyref2. Sick of waiting for them to pull the trigger.
thatscottishguy ยท 26-30, M
@ArtieKat Didn't say you were a Tory just was pointing out it's a stupid meme. I'd argue but I've given up trying to convince people who don't have a say in it. Maybe after we leave I'll start again.
ArtieKat ยท M
@thatscottishguy Good luck. For the record, I think that Ireland should have had independence in 1916.
thatscottishguy ยท 26-30, M
@ArtieKat That we agree on
SW-User
Possibly lib Dem most likely Labour.

Will it solve deadlock? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Likely to be a hung parliament esp as brexit party might actually take a few seats as may lib dems in London and sw.

Tory / brexit coalition for 5 years? I'd rather be dead in a ditch..... I probably will be actually.
SW-User
I don't think it would help clarify anything, probably result in another hung parliament and lots of cancelled school christmas events. I think the only clear result would be in Scotland, a big SNP win and more fuel for another referendum. I would probably vote SNP.
RodionRomanovitch ยท 56-60, M
It needs to happen sometime soon , so yeah ..... even at the very real risk of a thumping Tory majority.

I'd vote Plaid for the first time ever.
ArtieKat ยท M
We should have had an election last month. Let the people of the UK decide on the way forward.
SW-User
Hi. Can I join in?
Burnley123 ยท 41-45, M
@SW-User You don't need to ask lol.

Go ahead
SW-User
@Burnley123 I've not kept up with the thread but my view , as someone that was too young to vote in the 2016 referendum , is that democracy would be threatened if we don't leave. The imminent general election will be dominated by Brexit so essentially this is the people's vote/2nd referendum. It's a tactical election for voters
room101 ยท 51-55, M
@SW-User Totally agree. But here's the rub.

Neither of our major parties are fully Remain or Leave and, according to every poll and every bit of anecdotal evidence that I've seen and heard, neither is the country decided one way or another.

So, a general election will yield what???????
Nyloncapes ยท 61-69, M
Yes and let's get a majority in government
Burnley123 ยท 41-45, M
@Nyloncapes It has. I don't know what will happen now.
Nyloncapes ยท 61-69, M
@Burnley123 do you think brexit party will take a lot of votes, you said in earlier post about labour MPs fear losing there seats I presume you meant in leave areas where now them mps according to voters are doing what they can to keep us in EU and delaying brexit
Burnley123 ยท 41-45, M
@Nyloncapes I think some of them exaggerate that fear. I don't think the Tories will take many seats in Labour areas because of the Brexit Party and because most Labour leavers won't vote tory.

The country is so divided and there will be so much tactical voting. Will labour leavers stick with us? Will labour remainers vote lib dem? Will Tory remainers still vote for their party if they are anti Brexit? How will peopke vote of they know their first choice can't win?

Its like 5d chess and there has never been an election like this. I think a Labour majority is unlikely but not impossible. Boris could get a majority or it could be a hung parliament.
