He is still a strong contender, but it is impossible to predict what will happen with the Democrat candidacy at this point, simply because there are so many Democrats who are not thinking in ways you and I might think.
If I were selecting a candidate, I would not select someone who appears to have some minor functional brain damage. I would probably not select someone who appears to lack stamina. And I would probably shy away from a candidate who appears to have set up several of his family members with sweetheart deals. And with someone like Biden, I would be extremely cautious in selecting his VP, because it is likely he won't make it out of office if elected.
I believe that when the Democrat party votes for their candidate, they will probably vote for a candidate who will, in their opinion, do the least amount of harm, and that is still Biden at this point. The TNT of his actions in the Ukraine has not yet completely detonated, so we will have to wait and see if that will blow up in his face.
Assuming the Democrat Party selects him based on the fact that the other candidates will all destroy this countries economy, I think he will have less chance of winning than Hillary. She, if slimy and corrupt, had, at least, a functional brain.

I wouldn't hazard a bet on the outcome of the next election - but I will bet the driving force will be exhaustion and earaches.
The majority of Americans, in my opinion, just want somehow to achieve silence - for both extremities to just [b][i]shut up for ten minutes[/i][/b].
