@QuixoticSoul By definition, illegal immigrants are law breakers

I am playing devil's advocate, because I agree with your statement, but I will say this: There are SOME programs socialist in nature which are presently in use in the United States, like Social Security and Medicare for people over the age of 65, which are extremely valuable.

These are social safety nets, designed to prevent the impoverished elderly from dying in poverty and disease, uncared for when they become too old and too sick to work. Old age is a simple fact of life, and these programs deal with it.

(The fact that both social security and medicare are in financial trouble right this minute without ADDING more people to those programs, should be a giant flashing red light for those who wish to topple those systems by overloading them).

During the Great Depression of the 1930's, I think people here would have been happy to stand in a bread line longer than the Black Friday line at Walmart. I don't know if they would want to do that every day.

Socialist programs like welfare and food stamps ensure that those who are legitimately in a state of extreme poverty do not starve. We also have socialist supplemental programs, also based on income, where people who are down on their luck can go and get food at food pantries located in churches and in every town.

So, the socialist programs we HAVE are very helpful...and at present we can even afford to fund them.

Like a life raft designed for a certain number of people, socialist programs must be sustainable and fundable for the number of people who will be using those programs.
@4meAndyou As always, I am impressed by the depth and insight reflected in your response. I think I might want to bear your children.

@puck61 Gosh...where were you when my son was getting ready to be made? 😂
@4meAndyou Alas, "Ships that pass in the night, and speak each other in passing, only a signal shown, and a distant voice in the darkness; So on the ocean of life, we pass and speak one another, only a look and a voice, then darkness again and a silence."
😉
The problem with spending other ppls money.. is eventually you run out

All of Northern Europe, most of Western and Southern Europe, both Australia and New Zealand, Canada -- these are all failures in your book?
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@Mamapolo2016 To some extent from when Teddy Roosevelt busted the trusts through FDR's New Deal. Minimum by most standards, but still a socialist economy.
Minimum by most of whose standards?@dancingtongue
@dancingtongue Constitutional monarchies, and democracies with expansive social programs are not socialist. Danes and Norwegians hate that common generality specifically! If honest rulers use north sea oil money to benefit their people, it doesn't make them "socialist". The USA is not ready for Scandinavian style polieconomics , because the people who are touting "democratic socialism" here, are not the least bit honest and are only looking to seal their positions of power. Every political economic system is only as good as the people who wield the power. There is not an ounce of altruism among the powerdogs who are screaming for 'socialism' in the US. That is why we have to stay the course. These bloodthirsty devils would turn this country into Venezuela in six months.

It works in Denmark and other Scandinavian countries.

@puck61 You are not alone there. Major cracks are appearing that will take more than just money to solve. There seems to be a moral and educational decay. In the Dark Ages though, Europeans had not discovered the Americas yet!
@helensusanswift Really??????????? *Frantically searches google.* 🤪

@puck61 There you go! We all learn something new every day. :-)
Socialism is the womb of mediocrity at best. Capitalism encourages competition which always results in improvement and progress, whereas socialism stagnates and oppresses.

Can't change your mind. It is already made up, and it would be folly to try.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@windinhishair Tough to refute facts, is it not?
Djac17 · 22-25, M
I make these questions because I am interested in hearing others opinions, even if I don’t agree with it.@windinhishair
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@sunsporter1649 Indeed. When someone is already committed to an answer, it doesn't matter what facts are presented.

As a political and economic system, it's trash.
