Does someone want to explain the actual definition of a "liberal"?

And no, do not give me some made up label 😂. I want to see who here knows the actual definition.

It's someone with political and moral philosophy based on liberty, consent of the governed, and equality before the law; someone who is open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values.

@Carver Great answer!

What mystifies me is there is so much PR against liberalism why can't people just see that they (the political system in power) have reasons to turn us against the best interests of OURSELVES and OTHER PEOPLE?

It is so easy to see our common interests and so HARD to believe the political system in power knows better....based on what they have done so far!!!!!!

Someone who believes in liberalism, the liberty and rights of the individual, and that the government's role is to ensure those rights for the individual.

Most of the people called liberal today are actually anti-liberal, but welcome to clown world.
@Sicarium Precisely. Many just use it as a label without even realizing the true meaning.

@latinbutterfly no bias there, nope, none at all. Might have to ask the difference between liberal and libertarian
BalmyNites · F
The Liberal Democrat’s exist to build & safeguard a fair, free & open society, in which they seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality & community & in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity

A liberal is someone open to new things. Small c conservatives are traditionalists, they hate deviations from their expectations or preset ideas.

I believe the original definition of "liberal" is generous. When someone gives liberally, they give generously. When you apply something (lotion or ointment) liberally, you are applying it generously, in large amounts.

I know that "liberal" has come to mean different things, especially since the 1960's, but I believe that is the original definition.
TeresaRudolph71 · 51-55, F
@latinbutterfly Ooh, I just found a file that I saved of my definition of leftism and leftists. But it's not the original definition of a liberal, it's more the way some people on the extreme left nowadays seem to think. I could post it, if you like, though it might trigger some people. Then again, it's not the true, original definition, so maybe I shouldn't.
@TeresaRudolph71 Well it's up to you. Might want to get some armor and shield before you post it 😂.
TeresaRudolph71 · 51-55, F
@latinbutterfly Ha, I think I would have to prepare to be mass blocked, or flamed. It might be more appropriate for another post, about modern-day leftism. Then again, maybe I'm just feeling a little uneasy, as I know that I'm already blocked by many people and it never feels good to find that I've been blocked by another.

@HeilHitler oh of course. They tend to try to insult people who expose them and tell people they are the ones with a closed mind.

A society will end up having individuals and groups that aren’t the norm or good at what the collective society has established as its value system. Those disenfranchised groups will, therefore, be vulnerable to discrimination and lack of access opportunities and services. Enter liberals to compel society to see that these individuals/groups deserve the same rights and respect as any citizen.

Open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values

Just FYI. This is the ACTUAL definition of a liberal. If you think the definition is different you are giving an OPINION, not an ACTUAL DEFINITION which is what was asked for in the post.

Opinion does not equal fact.
ImKelsey · 26-30, F
I've heard it explained this way:

The conservative is akin to a sailing ship. The liberal is the wind that fills its sails. And the moderate controls the rudder.⛵️
