Boris Johnson is set to be the next British PM

He's just overwhelmingly won the first round of MPs vote.

The Conservative Party elects a leader in two stages. First MPs (members of Parliament) vote for their top two candidates. There are a few rounds of this and those with the lowest votes get eliminated after each round. The final two then go to the members vote.

Johnson got the backing of 114 MPs in the first round and - given that this is half the Conservative MPs in Parliament - he is virtually nailed on to be in the final two. He also has a commanding lead on all polls with party members so the only thing that can stop him is himself. The next two candidates (Gove and Hunt) are *relatively* moderate but are floundering badly.

This increases the chance of a no-deal Brexit.
Yay.

It's OK though he gives the press cups of tea to make up for the racism, homophobia and general stupidity. Old Boris he's such a good chap really.

@sdfdgsfasfdgsfasdasfsdgds Its performative racism and homophobia. He's from a liberal background and was actually born in new york. The 'post-boxes' comment was pure calculation, like everything he does.
@Burnley123 yer I lived on London during his first run at mayor, not exactly a fan of his but it is what it is lol

There is still some hope.

Earlier on, the BBC news story was pointing out that on at least two previous occasions, the runaway frontrunner in the first ballot got demolished in the second. Heseltine and Portillo were the examples given as I recall.

How odd that that paragraph has now gone from the story, this allowing Boris to further build momentum...

Correction, it was indeed Michael Portillo in 2001, but David Davis in 2005.

The former didn't get through to the final round; the latter did but lost the constituency vote.

You must be terribly excited!

@curiosi Imagine how you would feel if AOC was elected President. 😀

@Burnley123 Ok, now you have my utmost sympathy.

It all just moves us closer.

At this stage he does look fairly certain to win...I don't think it means a no deal brexit, as I think he is strong enough to get a deal with the eu...I'm not worried about no deal but I would hope we get a good deal...I think he is capable ...

Yes he is the only person who can stop himself being pm, yes looking like no deal on 31st October,
Well, Trump certainly endorses him. 🙄
