SATs now giving bonus points for being poor.

Why did I bust my ass for my kids the last 25 years exactly?
Northwest · M
I am not sure how this is going to work. I understand how someone who does not speak English may not be able to compete, but college classes are taught in English. There are alternatives, like community college, that will allow someone who's not a native English speaker, to progress in their field, while learning English, but that does not require SAT. When they're done with community college, they can apply to a 4-year school, and be successful.

I think this is a dumb move, that addresses a non-existing problem.

@Northwest I think it's about equality of outcomes over merit. At some point, one has to ask what is the point of an SAT test if you aren't really going to use the score. It used to be an objective criteria, flawed to some extent, but not as flawed as they would have you believe.

@GeistInTheMachine Yeah, apropos of nothing. Next.

IMO it's really a matter of political expediency and a way to pander for votes, and who gets dumped on doesn't concern them, because "they got theirs", didn't they?

Well I am not going to take the SAT again so I will go with better whiskey and newer cars. Somethings are worth it.
Elegy · 46-50
Don't see the connection. How do SATs now affect you and your 25 years of whatever?
Elegy · 46-50
@SW-User Meh, it happens. Better to have and not need than to need and not have.
SW-User
@Elegy We can't afford college out of pocket, and can't get financial aid, either. It feels shitty. If college becomes free (they will have an income requirement) I swear I'll have to quit a well paying job to fuck my income up so my kid can get an education. This isn't right. I thought the country was supposed to reward hard work and achievement, not punish it.
SW-User
@Elegy I also don't believe what I achieved should be artificially discounted because others didn't. Others couldn't disagree more.

You should have been born poor.

Better luck next time.

Also, that sucks that it took you so long to pass the SAT's, dude.

@HannahSky Looks like the FBI has a Special Squad!

Cute.

BTW, I gave your comment a "heart" out of pure pity.

Don't disappoint.
HannahSky · F
@GeistInTheMachine thanks for the pity, it means a lot
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@HannahSky I know, hun.
HannahSky · F
Because you love them. You can still find a way to get them through. You can do whatever you want. It doesn't have to be the way we were told to do it.
SW-User
@HannahSky I'll liquidate everything and then I'll be in poverty. Fine with me. She'll go debt free.
HannahSky · F
@SW-User you'll be ok. You'll find a way without giving up everything.
HannahSky · F
@SW-User that's love.. she's very lucky to have you.
St0ut · 51-55, M
Wait what?
SW-User
@St0ut They are adding points if your parents didn't go to college, low income, if you are a single parent, if English was a second language. Lol, my kids will actually be punished because I speak English! This is absurd.
St0ut · 51-55, M
@SW-User guess I’ll have to pull the white privledge card and bribe the kids in. Ohhhhhh. Yeah. I am not rich. I forgot for a moment
SW-User
@St0ut Yeah, same here. Stuck in the middle. Can't afford college and can't get financial aid.
