Reparations for slavery is stupid.

Sorry Dems keep fricking dreaming. It was your damn party that wanted slavery. Stop trying to deny it.
So why don't you idiots stop pretending the GOP is the same party it was in the 1800s. I don't see you guys taking pride in the fact that "Honest Abe" was pen pals and obviously influenced by one Karl Marx. It cuts both ways genius.
I might agree with you on reparations, but I think your attack on Democrats is questionable.

For one thing, I've never heard a Democrat claim that the party was anti slavery, or for that matter, deny that Lincoln was a Republican.

I have heard an awful lot of Republicans making the accusation, though, often in response to Democratic criticism of Republicans, absorbing the Dixiecrats and then adopting the Southern Strategy.

But that kind of gets to my second point, which is that attacking the other side for its prior seemingly inconsistent positions a century ago, like an ad hominem attack, doesn't really address any relevant issue.

Are you caught up in a time warp? This is 2019, not 1860.

I'm a leftist and I believe reparations are stupid.
I am also sick of the right PRETENDING that Neo-Nazis, Wite-supremacists, KKK, and other fringe right wing orgs are Democratic..

Yeah, Back in the day, The KKK was populated by Southern Dixiecrats.
No one disputes that. The right won't accept ownership of their racists and that the REPUBLICAN party is who now wants slavery.

SW-User
Agreed. Assuming the ones who were slaves are dead now. Doesn't matter which side started it though.
SW-User
@cherokeepatti In many cases, yes.
We have to accept that some simply aren't capable though.
And then you have to consider those who seem useless, but eventually invent something great, or solve some great problem. Maybe they never would without the support in former years.
It's not all black and white
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User No it’s not. And consider that most “whites” or their ancestors immigrated here after the Civil War. It was the elite that had slaves not the ones who worked on small farms or owned small farms.
SW-User
@cherokeepatti True, but the elites have been the elites for a very very long time for a reason. Very clever; tricky.
Also, many white people were enslaved as well. It's how a lot of us got here. so I've never cared about anyone spouting off about white people owing them in general.

Jesse Jackson and the black people, (including one college professor to whom I listened last night), who are promoting this idea state that because their ancestors were slaves, they have been socially and financially set backward by 150 and sometimes 300 years. In other words, they are saying that they, as a group, would have achieved far more success and financial equity at this point in time, if their ancestors had not been enslaved.

The college professor stated that they will have to do studies to see how the reparations would be paid. There was no mention made of the wild impracticality of locating each and every descendant of each and every slave.

There was also a notable fluffing off at the concept that a South American mother with three children, who is arriving in the United States tomorrow, is going to be told that she, and everyone else, is going to have to pay extra taxes to repay these un-located descendants of slaves, even though she has just arrived here.
@4meAndyou whoa. 40 acres and a mule didn't really care well during reconstruction.
Less than a year after Sherman’s order, President Andrew Johnson intervened, and ordered that the vast majority of confiscated land be returned to its former owners. This included most of land that the freedmen had settled. The Federal government dispossessed tens of thousands of black landholders. In Georgia and South Carolina, some blacks fought back, driving away former owners with guns. Federal troops sometimes evicted blacks by force. In the end only some 2,000 blacks retained land they had won and worked after the war.
@MistyCee Ah. Thank you for the real history. I should have done more research.
@4meAndyou The 20 acres didn't sound right so I googled it and and behold saw both 20 and 40.

Yet America profited from slavery.

@QuixoticSoul "think" is a tall order.

Here's what the Rhodes Scholar just PM'ed me:

@Northwest Truly a top mind, that one.

While I don’t disagree with the intent behind it, the Dems have no heartfelt sincerity in their motive whatsoever.
It’s only to buy votes unfortunately
HermannFegelein · 26-30, M
Yeah and did you hear how they were trying to get rid of the electoral college. What a bunch of idiots! They're delusional if they think they can get away with that. Don't they know that someday they may need that to win. They're just upset because Republican votes won this past election. Changing the electoral college may come back to bite them in the ass some day so getting rid of it isn't such a smart idea. It was created to protect the minority side of voters.
HermannFegelein · 26-30, M
@QuixoticSoul I wont argue with you there actually. Both parties have misinformed voters thanks to false information being spread on many popular news networks and through word of mouth. But this whole new wave of 'feminism', Black Lives matters, and Antifa appear to be spawning the most of these misinformed individuals. Just watch them when they get asked simple questions about current events, American Rights, and even their own countries history. The clueless responses they return are horrific.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@HermannFegelein There are just as many wingnuts on the right, and the body count is dramatically skewed in their favor. Instead of feminists and BLM, you have end times nutters trying to bring the rapture about through US foreign policy, and “unite the right” dumbasses, half of whom want their own ethnostate.

Frankly, as far the mainstream goes, Democrats are plainly less destructive, wacky-ass fringe or not. Ironically, these days they’re the “steady as she goes” party in terms of actual policy.
Just watch them when they get asked simple questions about current events, American Rights, and even their own countries history.
That is just editing. Democrats and Republicans are basically identical when it comes to civic knowledge. Both are abysmally bad.
TrashCat · M
@HermannFegelein GOOD! Let's get rid of the Electoral College ASAP

@Waymore why did you "Like" your own comment?
It's interesting when people propose a social change that can never realistically happen. Like reparations.

But it's more interesting when people vehemently protest a social change that can never realistically happen. Like reparations.

It's like they're making a whole different point isnit?
Zonuss · 41-45, M
Nobody wants reparations. This is such a non issue. You must be one of those dinosaurs in the GOP.😂
what I want to know is how this idea went from fringe to mainstream and why everyones suddenly talking about it.
@BetweenKittensandRiots Senator Corey Booker
@Tiredandlonely like i said, we're being played.
4meAndyou · F
@BetweenKittensandRiots I just heard on the news this morning that Georgetown University owned over 200 slaves prior to the civil war, and now they want to pay reparations to the descendants of the slaves they owned. They plan to bill their students for it, and have sent out a notice to students and their families asking them if they wish to participate.
