Is a Gerneral Election the only way to break the Brexit gridlock?

Today MPs voted to extend the Brexit deadline but also voted (by about 80%) not to have a second referendum. May has pretended to offer labour MPs a deal and offered almost nothing, gone back to Brussels to renegotiate what couldn't be renegotiated and failed. Tory MPs voted to have a leadership contest but then voted to (more or less) keep her in place.

Its a PM with no authority, leading a party with no majority trying to deal with a complex historically important issue which nobody in the country can agree on. We can't extend the deadline forever and something has to give. I think eventually there will be some kind of Brexit but not a hard Brexit and nobody will be happy.

The twin truths are that the referendum voted to leave the EU and that there is no mandate to change that. Also that Brexit is more complex than anyone imagined and that it can't deliver what it promised.

I don't think anyone can fix the brexit mess and stay in government afterwards; because the brave thing to do is get elected, immediately revoke article 50 for the good of the nation, then resign.

Everyone including Corbyn wants power rather than what's best.

@CheshireCatalyst That would be good for the country in an economic sense but would create such a huge distrust in politicians beyond what is already there. It would be a gift to the far-right.

@Burnley123 everything at the moment is a gift to the far right. This whole process has given them a huge soapbox, and while it continues they will be able to reach more and more vulnerable ears.

Quarantine is the only intervention the has ever worked with their rhetoric, but with brexit on the ears and lips and pens of every journalist, there is a market for those who would appoint themselves as the mouthpiece of the 'voiceless'.

IMO the far-right thrive on a mixture of cultural uncertainty and economic insecurity. I don't think you can deal with the former without doing what the far-right want so its the latter option which needs to be addressed. You know what I think is the only game in town for that but yeah, its a tough road.

@Platinum the bureacratic complexities of disentangling ourselve are immense and for a start, nothing of this scale has been attempted before. Essentially the whole endeavour is an experiment. Are you comfortable using your childrens futures as guinea pigs?

If you voted for Brexit that was your choice and as long as you dont moan when your living standards are reduced and all of a sudden, for the rest of your life (and conceivably your kids lives) this country feels like a 2nd world country, then I guess thats ok.

@Jm31xxx that is bs....the 330,000 immigrants that arrived here last year, where are they living, who's homes have they taken, who is paying them ( your taxes ) , how many are stealing, how name are raping our women, how many are grooming yours and other kids and how many are using knives....that is what will ruin our kids futures besides schools hospitals and doctors who can't cope...these are facts, whereas everything you said was unproven lies ...you want another million immigrants here in the next few years..you want to be made a third world country by the eu, who charge us more money every year while trading less and less every year...you want to ruin this country...

Im sorry you feel unfulfilled and powerless in your life. Maybe the problem lies within you, and immigrations are just a punchbag you need to relive stress (I did say maybe).

Incidentally my IQ is borderline peerless (mostly due to my highly evolved language skills and spatial awareness but Im ok at maths too). Its a blessing and a curse.

Immigrants in this country are more likely to work and less likely to use services than indigenous people.

Our British exports did their bit to contribute to the Spanish property boom before the bust but most never even bother learning Spanish, don't care about local people and are just there for Sun and San Miguel. Now I'm not saying that I think you would be like that but because assumptions can be wrong but...

You are calling me a liar and dick head cos you have run out of words in your sub Daily Mail standard analysis. Also because on a deeper level, you know I am actually right. For ex pats to hate immigrants, it goes beyond hypocrisy and into comedy.
