Serious question about american politics

what happends if its the day of presidental election, and candidate A is the winner.

but that very evening candidate A dies peacefully in his sleep. how would the electoral college vote ? would there be a new vote ? would the designated vice president become president ?

The Electoral College still meets in their state capitols in December of that election year and votes.

They do not have to vote for the vice presidential candidate of the party whose nominee died. Some states do have "faithless elector" laws but I'm not sure those laws have been tested in the Supreme Court.

For example, research the 1872 election.

The Democrat nominee, Horace Greeley, died before the Electoral College met.

Granted (no pun intended), he was the losing candidate against U.S. Grant.

But when the College met, the Democrat electoral vote ended up being split up among numerous people.
