As soon as any leader starts talking tariffs, you know you're in trouble.
The U.S can't compete in terms of industrial output or cheap labour.
So all they can do is limit imports.
Of course, that leaves you open to tit-for-tat responses from China. Potentially your largest market !
If they decide to ban sales to the U.S. and offer better deals to the rest of the world as a result, that's some pretty hefty U.S. businesses on their way out !

@Picklebobble2 Indeed. And remember that China has a centralised government and economy. They can roll with the punches much better than the US and Prosecute a foreign policy agenda in sync with the economy far better. All they need to do to stimulate their internal growth is ramp up the "One Belt , one Road" aid policy and start building roads, airports dams and sewerage plants worldwide for developing nations with Chinese materials and labour.
