Do you believe term limits for politicians is a good idea?

I'll go you one better. I think anybody who wants to run for office should automatically be excluded, then we should hold a lottery and put in the names of everybody else in the country who qualifies according to age, citizenship, etc., and draw names.

@Mamapolo2016 *draws from lottery* Aw, f**k, now I gotta be the president
Take it easy. Breathe. You have to be at least 35.@Zoeoz

Because if you want that job, you have ulterior motives and cannot be trusted. You also, in order to get INTO the run for the office, have to make powerful friends whom you will repay by doing what you're told.

This is not a serious suggestion, although I am quite sincere. It will never in a million years happen, so let's save our breath.@bijouxbroussard
@Mamapolo2016 You mean there’s no danger of me spending my retirement years having to serve in Congress ? 😏
That's precisely my point. You're a decent, intelligent soul - and YOU don't want it. Why do they?@bijouxbroussard

I like our mixed model. In some ways, continuity is a form of independence from interference, imparted by either a lifetime appointment, or the will of the voters. But the office of the president simply has too much power vested in it.

Absolutely. Lack of term limits and voter apathy are why we end up with Mitch McConnells, Steve Kings and the like.

I think they shouldn't be paid full salary as a pension when they leave office.
Yes. Public service is not a life long job and it breeds corruption
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@jetpack Public service is a life-long job for many, many public employees. And policy-making is its own skill, long term professionalism has its own benefits. New blood can always be infused by the voters.

And I don't actually think the revolving door would make the corruption situation any better. It might make it worse.

Yes. No more than ten years for any politician. (12 for the Senate)

For some politicians, yes. For others I don't think it matters as much. And for some (such as the Supreme Court justices) should ultimately be for life or at least much longer than a traditional term. Sometimes term limits shield against corruption, but other times it's good for politicians to not be beholden to a specific administration.

Term limits, yes, I think are a good idea. Limits on the number of times a person can hold an office though, I'm not so sure. What if we had a president who we liked so much that we wanted them in office for more than the set eight years? They'd still have to run for reelection after the standard four-year term but if they won again, and the people liked them, why not?

No. Those who are valid should not leave.
beckyromero · 36-40, F
No.

Not really.

They just run for other offices.

Yes. Supreme Court too.
yes for some of them

No,it puts the bureaucrats in charge. Terms should be limited by the voters on an individual basis. We have had them in Michigan and they don't work. We need to keep those who are effective and dump the others at the ballot box.
I can imagine someone becoming a life long dictator, so most definitely

@BeefySenpie Check out the 22nd Amendment.
DLTC85383 · 46-50, M
Hell yes!! Politicians are like diapers and should be changed frequently for the same reason!
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
We have term limits. They are called elections.
jackson55 · M
No, because they probably couldn't find a real job.
Montanaman · M
Yes to both questions. 🙃
