I’m surprised it’s Trump that’s backed down but I’m glad he did

I don’t really follow American politics so closely but I thought they might just give him his wall to keep the country moving. I guess not, so he’s changing tactic? But wall or not at least people are getting paid again.
I won't be surprised if it's shut down again. I also won't be surprised if Democratic leaders get the flu and are sinply unable to talk.
What were they?@Graylight

@Mamapolo2016 The first was a bipartisan plan to offer money for security but no wall. There were two others along that same line and another one regarding funding for reopening the government while still denying money for the wall but offering money for border security. The plan he accepted just today he could have signed 34 days ago.
I see. @Graylight

Democrats would never back-down lest the disgusting precedent of "government by hostage taking" become normalized. The Dems said "no" three weeks ago and meant it -- he just didn't listen.

@AndrewtheAlu Hard to say -- he caved to right wing talk radio hosts. He also said Mexico was going to pay for the wall. He had no idea what a government shutdown actually would entail. The idea that he held his own citizens hostage is beyond repulsive.
@SW-User yeah but the wall was his loudest campaigning policy wasn’t it? He would have to try seriously to get it at some point and the Democrats were never going to respond any differently

@AndrewtheAlu It was certainly up there, yes, as part of a general anti-immigrant stance. He never tried to strike a deal with Dems to get funding for the wall. He could have, but chose not to do so. The Dems indicated they would fund the wall in exchange for protections for illegal immigrants brought to the US as children. His right wing base made him back down. Nothing about the shutdown was inevitable -- that was Trump's doing which he proclaimed i.e, that he would "own" it. He's a horrible negotiator.

He will be forced to declare a state of emergency because NanChuck is still a giant bleeding a-hole and won't cooperate with anything he proposes.

Then the ninth circuit will put a delaying order on that, and he will be forced to wait for months, possibly years, until it moves up the line to the Supreme Court. By then, the homeless South Americans will all have been either raped, trafficked, have gone over, under or around the border and will have been caught by the border patrol...only there are no beds. There aren't even enough DHS personnel to process all of them.

It will be a repeat of the time that a busload of illegals was released into the street in a town in Texas, with no place to go, no money, no food, no water. Little kids on the street.

It will be great. Nanchuck will do a little happy dance.

Supposedly Trump actually hates confrontation in reality. His popular catch phrase, "You're fired." is just for the show.

Yeh he stole that from Alan Sugar lol@Xuan12

He backed down but the goal posts have moved closer in his favour than before, no?
@PainfulTruth but they said they would negotiate if the government reopened didn’t they? Or maybe I misinterpreted something I’m not sure. I thought they might give him enough to put up some kind of fence/wall thing to shut him up so they can get on with being the government but I guess the principle of even doing that is a problem. Maybe they will anyway.
Does he get control of it if it’s a national emergency? I don’t know how all this works

@AndrewtheAlu you can't believe a word they say, lol.
JovialPlutonian · 36-40, M
@AndrewtheAlu what would make it a national emergency? If ppl crossed it would be to seek refuge that's not, if not and they were criminals then do what ever you would do.
I'm surprised you're surprised.
@toodlepip idk, I thought Trump was the stubborn one. I haven’t followed it closely enough to see all the developments so I guess I wouldn’t see it coming as well as if I had

He’ll probably change his mind by tomorrow
I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop, tbh. Unfortunately, with Trump there’s always something.

@bijouxbroussard Yep. He is not, by nature, this diplomatic and agreeable. There's something on the horizon.
