Do you believe the wall is a prelude to comprehensive immigration policy reform?

Ynotisay · M
@Mal42 No. The 'wall' has NOTHING to do with immigration. The 'wall' was a talking point given to Trump so he'd keep scaring dumb white people about the brown marauders. That's what all of this is about.
midnightsun · 26-30, M
wall is just stupid and illogical because most of the immigrants arrive in planes.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@midnightsun Illegal immigrants are coming in by the planeload! Whouda thunk it!
Xuan12 · 31-35, M
Naw. Governing parties have had plenty of good chances for immigration reform, it never happens.
Northwest · M
The bipartisan plan, crafted in December, and rejected by Trump, because Ann Coulter insulted his manhood, was the right step in that direction.

The plan proposed by the Democrats in 2015, was as well, but that was rejected by the GOP controlled Congress, as expensive (it allocated more than $5B for border security).

The new House presented a plan, that moves us in that direction, during their first effective day on the job. McConnell refused to discuss it.

Trump's wall? No, it's not a prelude to anything other than the 2020 Presidential campaign, and Trump filed as a candidate on his first day in office.
Haven't we been through this "comprehensive" immigration policy issue/debate a few times under various administrations (the discussion of one anyway)? With the stubbornness we see on both sides, that may be a good way off.
Northwest · M
We were making progress. Some of these issues are supported by both parties.

It is in Trump’s hands now, and he oy cares about sound bites

@soar2newhighs There is only stubbornness on the Republican side because they are obsessed with "amnesty" and white supremacy.

lol, hell no. Republicans refuse to look at anything rationally.
We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev...Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!
No, but I wish it was.

It's a symbolic thing, and funding it won't help do the hard work necessary to get something together on a bipartisan basis to deal with the real issues.

I kind of think it would make it harder, but I can see how, a victory there might bring Trumpists closer to passing their own immigration policies by destroying democratic opposition to them and getting the American public more on board with those kind of ideas.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
We should do that first - it’s cheaper and more effective.
KaiserSolze · 46-50, F
No. I think Trump just wants somewhere to abseil.

@KaiserSolze

Nice...I had Drench for two years. But it was in elementary school 😂
Barriers are reasonable parts of a comprehensive immigration and security plan.

I reject Trump's wall simply because it's meaningless in the absence of just that-- a comprehensive immigration strategy.
4meAndyou · F
No. I have no faith in Congress whatsoever. They will let this country die while clutching at the throats of their enemies.
...and trying to clutch OUR $$$ too!@4meAndyou
Sicarium · 46-50, M
We don't need comprehensive reform. Simply enforcing the laws already in place and minimizing the illegal crossings will deal with the problem.
Pfuzylogic · M
We need a state department first.
That has been totally trashed.
