Why do Americans hate and distrust Communism? Discuss.

Well mostly from what I hear from people that lived in communist countries

hunkalove · 61-69, M
They don't like to share.
Communism has a bad reputation for being associated with dictatorships and failed economies. There's bit more to it than that, of course, but that's it in a nutshell.
4meAndyou · F
@Existentially Really incisive.
21stCenturyFox · 26-30, F
Because it's false and stupid to assume that people will put forth their best without tangible compensation. Money or an iron fist. Choose.
4meAndyou · F
@21stCenturyFox That makes super sense to me. Of course, if you were sent to a special school and indoctrinated from a very young age, you might think differently.
SW-User
We believe you work for what your needs and desires. Nothing should come free.
4meAndyou · F
@SW-User Sort of an American work ethic? Rise and succeed only by your own efforts?
SW-User
@4meAndyou yeah personally I feel like people are entitled to help people around them. If you’re successful there’s no reason for people in your family to suffer as long as they are trying. But I don’t think the government should get involved just let people help people
4meAndyou · F
@SW-User I tend to agree to a certain extent, insofar are there are people who actually have family to help them. However, I also believe the government programs that safeguard the elderly, the disabled, and children of impoverished families are necessary. Because if you just let people help people, too many people will fall through the cracks.

Well, the US was founded on the principles of individual opportunity and Liberty, while communism stresses “the people” and “the state” over individuals.
jackson55 · M
All for one and one for all, right?
jackson55 · M
[@ It doesn't matter what president visits France, they are never grateful for anything the US has done for them.
4meAndyou · F
@jackson55 Well, a waitress was once rude to me in Paris. It must be a thing.
jackson55 · M
@4meAndyou They are a snobby bunch. They think their culture is superior to anyone else's.
Peaches · F
Because you'd be held against your will to do or say anything without risking your life. 😳
4meAndyou · F
@Peaches There you go. That Chinese guy who claimed he had changed the DNA of two babies and implanted them in a woman and brought them to term...has disappeared.
Peaches · F
@4meAndyou Whaaaat?! 😱I never heard about that one?!
Thodsis · 51-55, M
The Little Red Book disagrees with The Dusty Old Book.
4meAndyou · F
@Thodsis Ahhh. Good point.
MissPriscillaPrim · 70-79, T
@Thodsis I assume you're talking about the Bible. The Apostles were a socialist community. Acts 4:44-45: "All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they shared with anyone who was in need." But anyone can pick and choose Bible verses to justify anything they want, from Utopian socialism to racist genocide.
Riverman · 56-60, M
It has failed everywhere it has been tried.
4meAndyou · F
@Riverman Not in China...yet.
Riverman · 56-60, M
@4meAndyou China was starving and going broke so they had to introduce a controlled form of capitalism to save their butts. Communism cannot long survive in its pure form. Eventually you run out of other peoples money.
TheConstantGardener · 56-60, M
Is this an essay?
4meAndyou · F
@TheConstantGardener That depends on you. Can you tell us using emoticons? 😂
TheConstantGardener · 56-60, M
Well to be controversial, I don't think Americans can distinguish between socialism and communism. It's true that many so called communist countries have been highly oppressive and tyrannical which doesn't help. On the other hand America has done its best to undermine them and to see that they fail. It's a very complicated story.
4meAndyou · F
@TheConstantGardener You do cut right to the chase, because that is the next question I plan to pose to the SWeeps right after this one. The difference between communism and socialism. Because you are correct, they are different.
Stalin
Mao

That's a good start.
4meAndyou · F
@CopperCicada There you go.

Did you know we have huge oil tanks in Boston that were painted by a nun, and it was a huge scandal that even though they are supposed to be abstract splashes of paint, you can see Chairman Maos profile on one of the splashes.
Because 99% have no clue what it is.
4meAndyou · F
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I think that is something I wanted to address in this post, and the responders here seem to know a great deal.
xixgun · M
My wife grew up in a formerly Communist country, when it was still Communist.
If she says it sucks, I'm going to trust her judgement.

By the way, in Communist countries, the ardent supporter of Communism is not looked on favorably either... and tends to disappear.
Bearserks · 31-35, M
Better dead than red!
MissPriscillaPrim · 70-79, T
@Bearserks We the People are suffering because we tolerate the ultra-wealthy to hire their own personal legislators to tilt the game entirely in their favor.
Bearserks · 31-35, M
@MissPriscillaPrim guess we should do something about it then huh?
MissPriscillaPrim · 70-79, T
@Bearserks Ballots, not bullets. But unfortunately, too large a segment of the population has been brainwashed into thinking the wealthiest have our best interest at heart... religious dogma being a key tool.
DDonde · 31-35, M
Well, the Soviet Union was a mortal threat to our existence, and the major states that existed that called themselves Communist were largely single-party, oppressive totalitarian states. People haven't forgotten the cold war.
DDonde · 31-35, M
@4meAndyou No. It was McCarthy exploiting public fear for political gain.
4meAndyou · F
@DDonde Do you think the fear that was created against communism and suspicion against all communists still exists among the elderly who live through those times?
DDonde · 31-35, M
@4meAndyou Possibly. I don't know.
