Can you be friends with some who expresses opposite political views than you

firefall · 61-69, M
It depends what views. I had to sever a longstanding friendship with one guy who started fairly vocally advocating that women should go back to just being lowpaid nurses & teachers, and sacrifice their lives for "the greater good of society"
daisymay · 51-55, T
No. The time for reconciliation has come and gone. This fanatical team bullshit is what conservatives have been longing for for decades. Time to let them experience the fullness of it, especially the unintended and unforeseen consequences.
Yes, and with some friends with differing views, I even enjoy talking about politics.

With others, it's best to avoid the topic, even if we both seem to be on the "same side.".

I can be friends with anyone regardless of what they believe, unless they believe I should be killed or something lol.
Depends on where we differ. Usually yes, but if they come across as extremist, I usually stay away.
Cierzo · M
Sure, as long as both them and me are able to joke about our differences.
Carver · 31-35, F
I can but most other people can't, it seems. Fucking political tribalism. 🙄
helenS · 36-40, F
Yes absolutely. I think I even prefer friends with different views.
Pherick · 41-45, M
I can, as long as we don't talk politics :) Usually.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
If they play golf and smoke pot, sure!!
The very best friends I've had in my life have been my political opposites. Of course I am a conservative authoritarian right wing nationalist patriot, so I have a lot of political opposites!

It's actually supposed to written, AUTHORITARIAN CONSERVATIVE RIGHT WING NATIONALIST PATRIOT
If the views are radical...nope.
SW-User
Sure. I respect everyone's right to their opinion and I think it's helpful to keep an open mind. I suppose if it is an extreme view in either direction it may be difficult to be friends if they are unwilling to have a civilized discussion about it.
SW-User
Yes, I can be friends with people with different views, as I don’t have a biased perspective despite what I believe or they believe in. Also respecting one another for that works both ways too.
Yes and no. Yes because I hate politics and don’t follow it whatsoever never have and no because if someone is going to talk politics non stop they won’t be my friend to begin with.
InvaderNice · 26-30, M
I used to be able to say that my best friend and I have opposing views but she changed and stopped talking to me, specifically for that reason. 😒
NotJamieM · 46-50, M
I can be, but not if they're going to run around wanting to talk about it all the time.
irishblue · 26-30, M
Depends on how important politics is to you. I’d struggle to do it I think
thatscottishguy · 26-30, M
Yes but can depend on the views and if we can manage to talk about other things.
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
Politics is generally a topic best avoided anyway along with religion and money.
Yeah, as long as they arent toxic and forceful with their opinions
nem16 · 36-40, M
Sure,as long as we don't talk about it.
Arorin · M
I can be friends with anyone who treats me well.
Yes. I accept that we all have different opinions.
JP1119 · 36-40, M
Yeah. I’d probably be pretty lonely if I couldn’t.
Prettybrat · 26-30, F
Yeah if my mom did is so can I
eli1601 · 70-79, M
No. I would consider them stupid.
Ainny · 41-45, F
It’s not easy but I try to
SW-User
Yes. Of course
Fernie · F
It was never a problem before this maniac stole the election...now, I can't be in the same room with someone who supports this vile creature
helenS · 36-40, F
@Fernie ... unfortunately, this is exactly what this "vile creature" wants: dividing people.
Fernie · F
@helenS It makes sense to me to keep my distance from anyone who defends him...how can there be any unity there? I would be supporting evil...I will remain divided in that case.
MeAgain · 51-55, M
I guess it depends on how well you can manage indifference. No one I know have identical ideals on everything and must compromise at some point. And yet there are others whom I can't tolerate. You draw lines where you have to.

Mostly, yes. Sometimes though, I could strangle trump supporters who insist that moron has done anything good when he has done nothing but harm
Mtwa85 · 46-50, M
Yes and we should be able to listen to what they have to say and not call them names and be close minded to them
SW-User
Yes... as long as they are not hostile about it.
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
I have a some friends like that
SheikYerbouti · 51-55, M
Of course.
DDonde · 31-35, M
It's hard, but yes. The key is mostly to avoid political discussion, which is usually a good idea anyway.
