Is political discussion still possible with the internet around ?

no matter what topic you always end up with people generalising or derailing a topic and people mixing up facts with opinions.

@AngelofFail I am sure the British at the time had a different opinion.

@chrisCA exactly my point

@AngelofFail Yep, Socotra is part of Yemen. And you're right, it really does look like some kind of other planet or something, it's very bizarre.

No, it's just about pointless. Nobody's really going to change another's mind. It's mostly "you're a fascist/ you're a communist " followed by ad hominen attacks.

@SheikYerbouti i agree.. but is a democracy even possible without well informed and educated citicenzs and no political debate ? if people vote how they feel and not with their brain a democracy is doomed to fail

Yeah it's possible, me and my uncle Paul discuss politics fairly often without getting too distracted. He gets really worked up though and I have to continually remind him to take it easy.

I have a relative I used to be able to talk about anything with, but he went insane and accused me of loving a certain politician (I'm apolitical lol) after I questioned his sources when he said something about that politician.
It intensified when I tried to encourage him to investigate what he was reading about and to not just take the headlines word for it

I think it is possible but one has to develop a thick skin. The thing is, we just never know who we are dealing with online. There are even many governments in the world now who employ people to cause confusion on social sites. Telling truth from fiction is becoming more difficult.

@Wraithorn its like in that simpsons episode... we used to have a few controlled news outlets... but now we have everyone spew their bile camouflaged as news

@AngelofFail Yeah. It seems that constant mental manipulation has become a really big thing now. Actually it has probably always been a big thing except that the internet has opened up the playing field to everyone.

I think the 24 hour news cycle ruined it before the internet... It's never discussed only debated- and neither side will ever change their thinking
