Does the culture war make some people vote againts their own economic interests?

Divide and conquer. For example, Trump's main legislation has been to pass a tax cut for the rich yet very few people seem to make the case for trickle down economics now.

Politics is not just economics and the other stuff matters too. Try a thought experiment though: imagine a world where people did not feel divided interests on race, gender, sexuality or cultural preferences. Perhaps the only identity left would be economic class. I think rich people and establishment politicians would be worried about that situation and they would try to create a culture war...
they thrive on us fighting with each other..

first it was the class war. remember the proletarians and the bourgeoisie ?. then the western world bastardized it into sex, race, religion.. same tactics, same effect.

You're describing the cultural Marxist conspiracy theory. It's the opposite of my point lol.
I do believe some people prioritize voting. Some people prioritize based upon econmic issues, others on social issues, etc. So I believe your premise occurs.

We all have issues that are more important to us personally - but the two party system holds us hostage to them, forcing us to choose between self-interest and conscience even when it seems like there should be no conflict.

That's right. There are social issues and foreign policy matters that are of concern.

Would you say to a person that they should only seek out and marry the wealthiest potential mate?
