Why can't we have a rational conversation on immigration?

Sure. Illegal immigration is obviously illegal, hence the name but instead of doing dumb shit like building a wall or putting kids in holding tanks, systematic changes need to be made in the legal immigration process which is extremely complicated and outdated. Furthermore, most of these illegal immigrants don’t know anything about the legal process of immigration so if there was a way to inform the public in other countries on the proper steps to do so, I think that would be a lot better.

As far as my philosophical views of immigration, I think immigration is a great thing and people shouldn’t be marginalized based on their heritage and culture

I think one of the reasons is because, at its heart, it's not a discussion about immigration at all. It is the expression of racism now so in vogue and condoned if not ignited by the sitting president.

This isn't about how to assimilate and acculturate, this is about 'keep' em out.' I've lost count of how many times now people have complained that White America is disappearing.
