@beckyromero The massive difference is neither Kennedy nor Khrushchev acted as though the photo opportunities were their main motivation. And, the historical records, at least on the Kennedy side, definitively show deliberate thought, careful consideration and preparation about the issue, without much (if any) concern about an obsessive need for publicity.

True and it's a good thing that Kennedy won the nomination and eventually the presidency and not Lyndon Johnson in 1960.

@beckyromero But, there was a clear and distinct strategy behind the actions. And, Nixon didn't praise Mao for his impressive leadership skills in suppressing his people. And, perhaps most important Nixon was able to answer questions about what deal he was making with China.
