Is POTUS above the law ?

"It remains our position that the President’s actions here, by virtue of his position as the chief law enforcement officer, could neither constitutionally nor legally constitute obstruction because that would amount to him obstructing himself, and that he could, if he wished, terminate the inquiry, or even exercise his power to pardon if he so desired." - Trump's legal team to the Special Counsel.

And lest we forget ;

But, the President is required, under oath and by constitutional mandate, to faithfully execute the law. So pardoning himself would be a breach of that faith.
@MarkPaul

Yeah, like what a fucking thing to say. "The president can't be obstructing justice because he IS JUSTICE!"

lol am i watching a movie about a super villain's rise to power?

@LvChris

lol pretty sure that's how trump thinks of himself.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Probably. The law is really grey about this stuff, and Mueller has said it's policy not to indict the president. It is not in the Constitution, and the law is untested, but short of a heinous act it's unlikely to result in indictment.

If the President breaks the law, impeachment is the way to go about it... which can be a trick depending on the political reality.

why doesen't he appoint himself President For Life?
@lorne13 I'm sure he probably has someone looking into that; whoever investigated his ability to pardon himself. 😏

@bijouxbroussard I thought a major reason for the War of Independence was to get rid of a King yet that seems to be what Trump desires for himself ☹️
I'm still trying to come to grips with all of the implications of Trump's legal team channeling Nixon.

When you think it about it, its pretty mind boggling how this PR campaign is being conducted.

Didn't we fight against a monarchy when we won the Revolutionary War? Why do we want to go back to a monarch now?

uh, presidents gotta give it up before they can pardon their own asses.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
Well, if it's a Democrat, even a presidential candidate is above the law.
Yeah, the more things change, the more they remain the same...
lorne13 · 61-69, M
@RodionRomanovitch tricky dicky had someone ready to pardon him, he didn't have to do it himself, interesting that trump doesen't trust anyone to do that for him
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@lorne13 Surely that obsequious litte turd Pence would step into the breach , no ?
lorne13 · 61-69, M
@RodionRomanovitch it would offend trump's massive ego to not be able to pardon himself
No, he is not.
