Why do so many pro enthusiasts cite protection as their #1 reason for having them ?
Do you think that's a political thing or is law enforcement so bad it's come to that ?

@QuixoticSoul I lived there a long time ago. Long before Frau Merkel was in power.

@Carissimi By and large German crime has hovered at roughly the same rates, with small increases and decreases. The high point was actually in the early 90s, probably due to the stress of integrating GDR. Merkel's tenure had relatively little effect, despite all the hoopla around migrant crime - which doesn't mean that the situation shouldn't be taken seriously.

@QuixoticSoul So when all the women were groped, raped, and sexually assaulted on NYE, in Cologne, we shouldn’t take it seriously? When a grandmother is raped by a “refugee,” we shouldn’t take it seriously? When a migrant walks free after raping a 10-year old boy because the judge wasn’t sure if the CHILD had consented or not, we should not take it seriously? These are three of many crimes. You are either asleep or part of the propagandist machine.

We've had an absolutely massive decline in gun violence over the last few decades - we absolutely were experiencing this rampant nonsense. It's just a weird rose tinted glasses thing that people have when they look back and think the world was safer when they were young. It wasn't. By nearly any metric.
There has been a rise in mass shootings - though we had those back in the day as well. But overall gun crime and firearms death are quite a bit lower.
Mass shootings are still extremely isolated, lone-wolf attacks, by unbalanced individuals. Just as they were during Texas University Massacre, etc.

@SerenitiesScars They're all isolated incidents, by their very nature. Parkland shooting was also an isolated incident. I don't know what you're looking for exactly - here are a few.
August 1, 1966, the Texas University massacre. A dude killed seventeen, and wounded thirty one.
December 30, 1974 - a high school honor student and the star of the rifle team started shooting from the school grounds, killed three and wounded eleven.
January 29, 1979 - 16 year old girl shot up an elementary school across the street from her house. Killed two, wounded nine.
Anyway, like I said - they are becoming more common, chiefly for "copycat" reasons due to the media hoopla - but they ain't new.

Isolated in the sense that a year or two passes before another mass shooting even has the chance to occur..

@SerenitiesScars Nobody denies that mass shootings are on the upswing. Thankfully, rate of general gun violence is much lower than it used to be, so less people die than they used to overall.
1980 was the high point of firearm deaths in the US - just about 40 years ago.

Society changes, culture changes, the political climate changes. But guns are still responsible for more unnecessary deaths than actual good in this country.
