The goal of the treaty was to pressure China on trade. Trump wants to pressure China on trade.

In times of strife (eg: nobody making money) people go 'Protecionist'. - Trying to safeguard their own pockets of industry.

The [i]real[/i] stupidity was calling out U.S. steelmakers and telling them they need to get cheaper production going !.........Without [i]knowing[/i] that China/Russia/Eastern European/maybe even some African nations can produce the same stuff (or better) cheaper !

Hence all that bolo on Trade deals when he first came in and more recently import tariffs because he knows he can't compete !

It's isn't going to be a Democrat government either. Is their really a point to get into that rabbit hole of the two parties though? Neither one is willing to return a backed currency inbstead of a debt based one.

@MethDozer That's a minor issue. The main issue is the government deficit, which is about government taxing and spending. The last president to president over a balanced budget is Bill Clinton.

@WoodyAq I'll agree about the taxing and spending being the main issue. It's way too much in both. Maybe playing world police and saviour isn't such a good idea.

Actually withdrawing from that and TTIP is the one thing I am glad Trump has done. Although I don't think he had the same reason to dislike it as me. If he even had a reason.

The idea was to flood asian markets surrounding China with US dollars, and maybe even convince some of them to keep it as a reserve currency, or more of it. This way the Chinese would be pressured to continue holding US dollars as their reserve currency as well, essentially ensuring that China could take no action that severely threatens the US economy or financial system without destroying their own wealth as well. China couldn't be more pleased that the US is no longer a party to it.

@MethDozer I'm sure the other countries in the agreement also had trade with others in the agreement prior. Why do you suppose they would want to organize into a larger agreement then when they already had trade?

Good idea. The TPP was a terrible plan and mostly gave all power to multinational conglomerates to police themselves. It was a terrible plan for all but a very few.
