What would you do if your kids walked out of school during these supposed walk outs for gun protests?

Deadcutie · 18-21, F
Support them
Scubaguy027 · 46-50, M
@Deadcutie i would still NOT let her leave school for a protest for this. As I said I know my daughter and even if she was there for HER this would be pointless. What other parents do is there business, I know what I would do for mine.
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
@Scubaguy027 I respect how you choose to parent your daughter and would not judge those who decide not to take part. Thank you for your support of public education.
Deadcutie · 18-21, F
@Scubaguy027 and that's what you should of said in the first place.. but don't you dare come here to say what others determine as a course of action as bullshit..after all this supposed bullshit as gotten more done so far than any other body so far, now that's bullshit...
chrisCA · M
I would support them in speaking out, and expressing their views.

@Greenbare Right 😏

She has not made up her mind yet, but I will support her decision.

The school is encouraging an after school hours protest.
MethDozer · M
@MistyCee I think I misread it at first and thought of it as the school encouraging them to do it and now think I see he was talking more about them giving advice on how to better demonstrate their own choices to protest in a way they aren't sacrificing their education while still being able to be heard.
@MethDozer Its a pretty complicated issue for teachers and counselors, at least in a private school setting where they may have some voice in what to do.

I'm sure there are schools with a zero tolerance policy but I'm happy in this particular case that, despite the fact that some of the counselors are (IMO somewhat ill advisedly) telling students they'll go to bat for kids if they face disciplinary action for skipping, the administration has not come up with a knee jerk reaction to either punish kids or let them run free.

I want a partner in my school to help make my kids capable of making their own decisions, and not just a place to keep them locked up from 8-3 each day and indoctrinate them with information.

Wish I knew where they'd come down on this one, though. No matter what they do, there are going to be some pissed off parents screaming at them.

I do like the after school thing, though.
MethDozer · M
@MistyCee Another thing I would say that is misguided about skipping school as a protest is that is obviously going to be a few slackers who just use it as a way to get out of school that day and that kinda distorts the cause and gives some fodder for those who want to scoff at the point.

I love the way these trumpettes bleat on about the 2nd amendment (regardless of how many people lose their lives on daily basis) but go apeshit when kids want to exercise their 1st amendment rights.

I would suggest that there is serious cognitive dissonance going on within Conservative America but, that would require that they had cognition in the first place.
@Invisible

Let's make sure we're on the same page here. Tell me what you think they are protesting and then tell me how that infringes on the rights of american people
@room101 Calling Trumpettes Conservatives is getting old and really is sort of slanderous to real Conservatives, if there are any left.

It's probably just SW and my crazy relatives, but I can swear sometimes that the entire "ruling" faction in the US is a bunch of neo-dittoheads, only with Trump instead of Limbaugh telling them what to think.

Is there a single Trump supporter out there who read Orwell?
room101 · 51-55, M
@MistyCee A better question would be, is there a single trump supporter who has read? I got blocked by a trumpette who insisted that Orwell was against socialism. This, despite the fact that I quoted stuff from George-Orwell.com and that it's a well known fact that Orwell was a life long democratic socialist.

Anyway, I understand what you're saying. Perhaps the article that you posted from The Atlantic answers your concerns.
I'm actually glad my daughter has already talked with me about potentially doing this and is in the process of making up her mind as to what to do after consulting with teachers, college counselors and the administration.

Maybe I'm negligent for not TELLING her what to do, but I'm proud of her for thinking about how to handle it intelligently with regard to the consequences, and for seeking advice both from her parents as well as her teachers.

Plus, I know my daughter well enough to know that if I just told her what to do, there's a good chance she'd do what she wanted and I wouldn't find out what that was until later.
Scubaguy027 · 46-50, M
My daughter would be grounded quicker than shit. She is in school for an education not for a BS protest that in the long run won't matter. I would also ask the school why they are allowing a minor to walk out during school hours and leave campus without parental consent.
@Scubaguy027

So what you want to teach your daughter is that what she believes in is not important.
You do what you're supposed to do no matter what you believe.

Cool parenting

something tells me you'd have a completely different attitude if the kids were skipping school to protest the illegal acts employed by the corrupt top dogs at the fbi and doj in their effort to illegally spy on him and his campaign, hoping he'd do something. I mean if you're hitlery you probably assume everyone else is as crooked as you are..
@katielass

😂😆🤣

Oh come on. You know i can't take you seriously when you talk that way. You're a grown up. Act like one.

And i can't comment on your aggressively partisan hypothetical scenario.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
There would be consequences when they got home.
Graylight · 51-55, F
Host a sleepover. At best, they're helping shape the way their government works for them and saving lives. Hopefully at worst, they're learning to think, evaluate, fight for a cause and are taking part both in their nation's politics and a social movement.
Invisible · 26-30, M
I'd homeschool them

Not during school hours. I'd march his ass right back inside and tell him he can march on his own time.
@katielass

Good job. Repress that right to protest early on. Much more important that they learn calculus

I'd let them do what they feel they need or want to do but would explain to them they are being manipulated and used.

@Pikachu Don’t chase him away. He’s one of the best sources of unintended comedy on SW.
@luckranger71

I do love his posts. Such totally mad bullshit delivered with such conviction!
