GUN LAWS... A "How To" guide to fixing this

Enough already! Here is how to get sensible gun laws.
Step 1. Get a list of those politicians who accept donations from the NRA directly of through PACS. The lists are on line.

Step 2. Decide that you will not support one who takes a donation next time and more importantly WILL support one who DOESNT.

Step 3. Email them and TELL THEM that you are watching and how your vote will go and tell your friends to do the same.

Step 4. Keep the pressure on. All that is required for bad things to happen is for good people to do nothing. Donald Trump is not going to make America Great again.. But ordinary people can do extraordinary things if they actually try.
The truth is nobody cares if people are killed by violent crime. They want to protect themselves and everyone can fuck off. If you happen to care you are automatically labelled a liberal harpie whether you're talking school shootings, DUI, DV. Doesn't matter what the violent crime is.

@CopperCicada that to.. as long as it happens to other people, not your own..

Did you know that outside the most heavily 'gun controlled' areas in the US, The US has a very low murder rate closest to the bottom of the list in the world in fact. Don't let statistics get in the way of a good gun control rant though. Carry on.

@hippyjoe1955 Is it really adequate gun control when the majority of the legislation is just registry and transportation related stuff though, I wonder...particularly when there is so many guns in circulation in general?

Do you think the murder rate would be better if your country tried to go cold turkey like England and get rid of pretty much all guns held by the public?
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Scribbles No we have very restrictive laws on guns and the murder rate by knife increased to compensate for the drop of murder by guns. There is no real benefit. It is what is in the heart not the tools being used. I stopped an attempted murder by knife at a wedding banquet. Someone pulled a knife and was about to slash his former wife's throat. I got the knife away from him and someone phoned the cops. They showed up 20 minutes later.

@hippyjoe1955 I think a murder rate will always stay the same, because as you said-it's in the heart. I believe gun control is all about preventing the number of mass shootings which is very different from murder rate (Which means I'm probably running off topic?)and how many people are killed...which it does. Knives can cause alot of damage and in some ways are scarier to deal with one on one then a gun in my opinion...but guns are scarier when you are in charge of a group of people-can't take the bullets for everyone. Isn't that an important enough reason to have gun control?

I've known people\friends tragically shot to death, and been in the area during a shootout and drivebys and outside a robbery in progress, etc etc. I've seen men carelessly wave loaded guns around. I've shot a gun once. I was taught to stab and run by a friend's boyfriend who had reason to seriously worry about our safety one summer. I've been held at knifepoint. And one of my best friends stabbed someone when he was a teenager. I've had multiple shooter response trainings. Life is fucking tragic. I just idk...think doing what we can to prevent harm is the right thing.

The problem is only about 12000 are actually murdered on average by gunns. Compared to other ways we die, it's just not that big of a number. 3.4 per 100,000 .. your odds of winning the Lottery are better than your odds of getting killed by a firearm.
I personally accept it as the cost for our live fast no care self absorbed society..

@Deadcutie
your odds of winning the Lottery are better than your odds of getting killed by a firearm.
Time to go and buy myself some lottery tickets. Wish me luck!

But seriously, you're right. Also, I have yet to see a gun jump up and shoot someone on its own. I wish people would take a closer look at the people committing murder, at their mental state and their personal history, instead of focusing on their weapon of choice. Did they have a bad reaction to some psychotropic drugs that they were on? Were there any warning signs that they might be contemplating murder?

But apparently most people can't be bothered to look into those things. Like you said, we've become a self-absorbed society. It's sad.

@Deadcutie Sadly, I think I agree... But it doesnt have to be that way..
Deadcutie · 18-21, F
@whowasthatmaskedman I also agree with you.. if people want real change, they have to look past party lines and vote the ones that resist change.. unfortunately more important issues tend to determine who get in..
Graylight · 51-55, F
This assumes commitment and unwavering principle in a land where most people will steal for you if you give them a free Big Mac.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Graylight Wow! I tend to be negative about many aspects of the current American situation. But I do believe in the people themselves more than that..
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Because criminals obey the law?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@MrBrownstone I said "Sensible Gun Laws" Like maybe a licence with a basic Psych test? I dont believe Americans will ever be disarmed.. There are just too many guns out there.. But making it harder for mentally ill people and criminals to get them legally and a crime for them to own them would be a nice step.
TeresaRudolph71 · 51-55, F
@whowasthatmaskedman I think we need to first make sure the laws we already have are enforced, before we start making new laws. It seems to me that that's the bigger problem. I do agree that it should be harder for criminals and people with mental illnesses that make them potentially dangerous to get guns.

The trouble is, so many of those people already have guns that it's a little late to try to prevent them from getting them. And they may also obtain them through illegal means.

This puts law-abiding citizens, who jump through all the necessary hoops to get a gun, when they feel that they are in danger, at a very real disadvantage. I agree, of course, that not everyone should have a gun, but some people need them to protect themselves. I don't think we've found the best solution to this problem yet, but this needs to be taken into consideration.
