What will victory in Afghanistan look like , and when (if ever) is that likely to occur ?

Ynotisay · M
"Victory?" Well, I think it's probably similar to all the 'winning' we're doing lately.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Ynotisay We should be getting tired by now , surely ?
Ynotisay · M
@RodionRomanovitch Bigly. I'm exhausted.

hi pezzza
I understand The Russians are supplying arms to The Taliban now - presumably like The US did themselves to undermine the USSR. There can be no victory for anyone if Afghanistan is just a proxy war like Vietnam or Korea was. Only when outsiders leave can Afghanistan win.
Best wishes
:)

CNN July 2017

abul, Afghanistan (CNN)The Taliban have received improved weaponry in Afghanistan that appears to have been supplied by the Russian government, according to exclusive videos obtained by CNN, adding weight to accusations by Afghan and American officials that Moscow is arming their one-time foe in the war-torn country.

US generals first suggested they were concerned the Russian government was seeking to arm the Afghan insurgents back in April, but images from the battlefield here corroborating these claims have been hard to come by.
These two videos show sniper rifles, Kalashnikov variants and heavy machine guns that weapons experts say are stripped of any means of identifying their origin.
Two separate sets of Taliban, one in the north and another in the west, claim to be in possession of the weapons, which they say were originally supplied by Russian government sources. One splinter group of Taliban near Herat say they obtained the guns after defeating a mainstream rival group of Taliban. Another group say they got the weapons for free across the border with Tajikistan and that they were provided by "the Russians."

The videos don't provide incontrovertible proof of the trade, of which Moscow has categorically denied involvement. Yet they offer some of the first battlefield evidence of a flow of weapons that has the Afghan and American governments deeply concerned about Moscow's intentions here.

Britain spent decades trying to subdue the country and failed. The Soviet Union spent 10 years trying and failed. America has been trying for 16 years and not so far had success - I don't see them succeeding

This man is proving to be a stupid and possibly dangerous fuckwit.
Declaring war on yet another country ???
How many more Americans........and probably allies are going to die in this one ?
Bad enough the mothers of those who lost their lives in Iraq haven't had time to grieve, and now here comes more.

When Afghanistan submits to the US, turns Christian, renames itself "Trumpland" and is strewn with gaudy hotels and casinos. 🙄

I am so exhausted from winning, I'm ready for a day of an R&R with some Afghani puppies :-) (yes, I know how to spell).

We the President just did, is declare war on Afghanistan. We're no longer interested in protecting Afghan's population. We're going to kill friend and for to defeat ISIS and the Taliban.

We've already won, twice. They keep coming back. Insanity is repeating the same thing, under the same set of circumstances, and expecting a different outcome.

President Obama promised to complete our withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014. We still have some troops there, so that promised was not fulfilled. We will now throw another 4K troops on top of what we already have, and win a few battles against an enemy, that's now hiding in Barcelona, Nice, London, Florida, California....

@LvChris The rules of engagement have now been changed to allow US forces to go after Taliban not posing a direct threat. Cue the collateral damage , cue the body bags ..... and on and on it goes.

Can anybody agree on what victory is? Seriously? To some, a victory is a total death and annihilation and to others it's peace. It will never end until we can agree to an outcome!
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
Victory in Afghanistan will be declared after Mueller drops his investigation, by coincidence obviously.

😸

@Burnley123 I have a suspicion that is being saved for his resignation.
sighmeupforthat · 46-50, M
uh.... victory? man, nobody got time fo' that!
we'll all be dead and reincarnated several times over.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@sighmeupforthat “I don’t think there is any serious analyst of the situation in Afghanistan who believes that the war is winnable. It’s possible to prevent the defeat of the Afghan government and prevent military victory by the Taliban, but this is not a war that’s going to be won, certainly not in any time horizon that’s relevant to political decision-making in Washington.”

That was from Laurel Miller who served as America’s top diplomat for Afghanistan and Pakistan until the end of June, when she left the State Department and the Trump administration shut down her office.
When the Taliban is forever gone. But I don't see how that could be managed, unless Trump plans to kill friends along with foes and nuke them. 😞

@bijouxbroussard For once his first instincts might have been right. I can't see what is to be gained by staying there any longer.
Xuan12 · 31-35, M
What even defines victory in Afghanistan? Osama's dead, there's nothing there we want, and does it seem remotely likely that we'll somehow build a stable democratic government there?
Cierzo · M
Who are the US exactly fighting there now?
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
Apparently the rules of engagement have changed so it's back to fighting the Taleban again .... oh yeah , and ISIS now as well.
Cierzo · M
@RodionRomanovitch No problem at all with bombing the ISIS fuckers who just killed 15 people in my country. On the other hand, Hezbollah condemned the attack. It is obvious who are the enemies of the western world to fight
