Slippery Slide To Third World Status

Before 6AM today, the President tweeted:
Amazon is doing great damage to tax paying retailers. Towns, cities and states throughout the U.S. are being hurt - many jobs being lost!
Background: Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon owns the Washington Post.

So, as the WaPo continues to provide factual coverage, and reports the real story, and seeing that people don't believe Trump's claims (that the WaPo is fake news), he's going after the owner (who does not actually get involved in the WaPo's content).

Amazon is one of America's success stories, it employs hundreds of thousands of people, and has made $Bs in investments in this country's manufacturing and infrastructure. But, because the WaPo refused to become FoxNews, then let's use the power of government to shut them up.

Doesn't this sound like something a third rate, third world dictator would do?

I happen to recall that when questioned about his own tax-dodging antics, Trump stated that it was his duty to do so for his company. Assumably this is tantamount to admission that Trump also harmed the tax payers by doing so. That and in any case, it would be Bezos's duty to make sure Amazon pays as few taxes as possible too, wouldn't it? Does the responsibility for crafting adequate tax law not fall with the lawmakers rather than the companies?

Notice how both the left and right have mixed feelings on this issue. This will raise controversy but not hurt his ratings because it is a 'populist' move and will resonate with some.

I have an opinion too and it may be slightly different to yours but I refuse to debate it right now because that is EXACTLY what Trump wants.

Meanwhile, the NAZIs of Charlotteville declare victory and the controversy dies down a little.

Expect more controversial tweets about other issues in the coming days. Nuts as he is, Trump is a great media manipulator.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@JimboSaturn He is also using another tactic called the wedge issue. This wedge is between Trump and Nazis vrs the rest of Republicans. Not sure this will work for him. He's losing.
Northwest · M
@JimboSaturn He's creating a false narrative, to support his explosive press conference. statues == history is not always true.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Yes very Orwellian. Fake history! @Northwest
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
It's dead cat strategy to divert attention from Charlottesville, just like the transgender military thing was designed to change the subject from his failure to repeal Obamacare.

Criticise his nutty tweets you but also call out the strategy.
Niburu · 51-55, M
The WaPo is about as factual as any other news source these days, you just have to know going in it's highly biased.
Since I live in Virginia and we have numerous Amazon warehouses I have to pay sales tax, Amazon is still cheaper than most retail places and certainly more convenient.
There is no reason sales tax regardless of state should not be applied.
Niburu · 51-55, M
@Northwest I wasn't answering your question, I was supporting your point about Trump being wrong about Amazon.
Since you apparently don't want me agreeing with you in any sort of way, next time I see you post something I agree with I won't post anything, since that at seems to be what you want.
Northwest · M
@Niburu You can play coy all day long, but when you start your interactions with me, by calling me obtuse, insisting on it, acting like you have some super power, specifically, the power to read my mind, and then follow that up in another post, by offering a vague response, that starts out with a reminder that the WaPo is biased, then you're asking me to read your mind. I don't have that kind of super power.

But then, you continue with the mind reading and passive aggressive behavior by saying "Since you apparently don't want me agreeing with you in any sort of way.....since that at seems to be what you want."

Post, don't post. It's really up to you.
Niburu · 51-55, M
@Northwest nope
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Is it just me, or do you feel the tide turning against Trump. I didn't think the race issue would do him in, but I think this weekend is a turning point.
har7070 · 51-55, M
@JimboSaturn So, the response from the Toronto's political establishment was to make changes to the structure of the political system in response to one incompetent individual? Are the limitations of the mayor's powers permanent (i.e. they will affect the successors as well)?
What interests me here is the way established systems adapt to temporary disruptive forces.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I think they worked within the established system and no changes are made to his succesors but I could be wrong. I don't think America should change it's structure (it's a good system in my opinion). I just think any of his ideas will never pass through the legislature now. @har7070
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
You can't really do to much to an elected president because you would be undermining democracy. @har7070
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
It appears successful, that's true. It's certainly large enough !
But Amazon is renowned the world over as being a bloody awful company to work for !
Northwest · M
@Picklebobble2 It's in my backyard, and quite a few friends and former colleagues work there. It's no worse than any of the other Seattle tech companies.

That said, I would agree that it could be an awful workplace. It's still better than Trump's coal mines, and the job comes with golden handcuffs, called stock options. Employees can walk away, and get another job, without having to move, but they stay (hint: the money).

It's even awful to get to work, unless you live in one of the residential towers, surrounding the company (more than 90% Amazon employees occupancy). The views are great, plenty of restaurants, a Tesla dealership at the floor level, and you're surrounded with lakes, like across the street.

I avoid the area between the hours of 6AM and 9PM, because it can take 45 minutes to cover a few blocks. But, when I have to do there, I know some side roads that even Wayz is not aware of :-)

But I digress, because this is not what the topic is :-)
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
I was going to post an article i read a few years ago, then did a bit of research on youtube and found dozens of scathing videos on the work culture....it's all there.
Northwest · M
@Picklebobble2 You can if you want to, but I gave the 100,000 feet level summary in my earlier post. Yes, for some, it's an awful place to work. There's got to be a reason why it takes months to book a decent therapy appointment in Seattle.
har7070 · 51-55, M
I wonder how much those tweets really bother WaPo and Mr. Bezos or hurt Amazon.
WaPo could consider them a sign of recognition :-)
SW-User
Amazon is a joke, it doesn't make a real profit, has mountains of debt and the main reason it can afford to be an online retailer is because it gets massive breaks from the post office and doesn't collect sales tax on most of it's sales..
one day the business will collapse..
SW-User
Amazon is a zero, just like tesla...
It's just a matter of time.
Northwest · M
@SW-User Tesla perhaps, but Amazon is not only about merchandising. Some of the data I've seen, suggests that 70% of the global Internet traffic goes through Amazon's cloud. If you don't know what AWS is, look it up. Also, look up Alexa.
lorne13 · 61-69, M
@SW-User Amazon has done very well lately
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
He is just the most ill-informed president "in history" as he says.
lorne13 · 61-69, M
Yes it does, and it's not the first thing like that
Jackaloftheazuresand · 26-30, M
The power of the government?
eli1601 · 70-79, M
Northwest · M
@eli1601 Any theories then, on why it seems EXACTLY like something a third rate dictator, in a third world country would do?
eli1601 · 70-79, M
@Northwest It doesn't
